| mdl178's Full Review: Dell Dimension XPS B1000 |
I purchased my Dell Dimension XPS B1000 in October of 2000. I have not yet been disappointed by it. Its performance is admirable. Granted, I could have probably built a faster computer myself for around the same cost, but I would surely not have the kind of support I have with this machine.
My Dell is very reliable. I leave it on 24x7 and have had no issues with that, save one, which I'll get into later. Under Windows 2000, I've been able to achieve uptimes of over a week easily. And even then, I didn't reboot because it got slow or unstable; it was because I installed some program that asked me to restart before I could use it.
In January, my video card's fan started making a noise. It was clear that the fan was dying and would need to be replaced. I logged onto Dell's support website and sent a message explaining the problem. Within a week I was in contact with a representative, and shortly thereafter, I was on the phone with someone to make an appointment to have the matter resolved. Dell replaced my video card with a new one, in less than two weeks from the time the problem occurred. I could probably have received even faster service had I called on the phone, but I didn't want to have to deal with this over the phone -- I'm a very busy person. The support website was very helpful.
I've been able to install multiple operating systems without much difficulty. Linux and FreeBSD installations went very easily. BeOS installation was difficult, since Be doesn't support my hard drive controller card. However, once I had a second hard drive installed on the primary IDE channel on the motherboard, BeOS installed and ran very smoothly.
Overall, I'm very pleased with my new computer. It's fast, it's reliable, and it's well supported.
