CompUSA - no receipt, no warranty

Mar 20 '01

The Bottom Line CompUSA does not keep warranty information on file. If you use your receipt to take advantage of a rebate, you lose the extended warranty you paid extra for.

In November of 1999 I purchased a computer from CompUSA as a Christmas present for my daughter. I paid an extra $200 for the extended warranty, and watched as the sales clerk entered what appeared to be my name, address, and sales information into the computer.
I utilized several rebates, so the receipt went off in the mail.
In December of 2000, the power supply on the computer died.
So, I carried it back to the same store and asked them to repair it.
Warranty? What warranty?
They did not enter that information into the computer. They tried to tell me that the only way they could find my customer information was to go over the actual paper receipts in the back. Since a task like that is time consuming, they offered to call me back.
Who ever heard of a COMPUTER STORE that doesn't store customer information in a database?
To make a long story short, they couldn't find it. They asked for the credit card number I'd used to purchase it - which I promptly gave them - to no avail. They said that no transaction had ever been completed on their system with that number. I can't get a copy of the transaction from the credit card company - I closed the account a long time ago, and their customer service department has not been helpful -but that's ANOTHER epinion.
I was thinking a power supply couldn't be all that expensive - friends and family have quoted them at around $60.
So I inquired about just paying them to fix it. They wanted to charge me $100 for service, which may or may not be reasonable, and $450 for the power supply. You've got to be kidding! My brother BOUGHT the same power supply from Hewlett Packard for $60 and some change!
So, I'm having my brother fix the computer and telling everyone I know to avoid CompUSA like the plague! I really wish I'd known about this site before I ever stepped foot in their store.
