| critic27's Full Review: Guillemot Gamesurround Fortissimo III 7.1 Sound Ca... |
I've used the Gamesurrond Fortissimo III 7.1 for about six months and I think it is a great, affordable sound card for those who can't or don't want to spend $200+ for the Creative Labs Audigy 2 Platinum. The Gamesurround Fortissimo III sounds just as good as my boyfriend's Creative Soundblaster (before the Audigy 2 came out), and that has some really complicated knobs on the front of the computer and a rather complicated software controller. He also had to have a technician put that thing in since it had more than just the card attached to it.
FEATURES: Plug and play (easy to install since I put it in myself); ports for a 7.1 speaker (color coded, although some manufacturers of speaker systems do not color code the same way... more on this later); port for an input device (i.e., keyboard); and a port for a microphone.
I plugged it into my monitor speakers (the different color code system I mentioned before), and had to guess which port to plug it into using the software provided by Hercules to test the sound. I knew I got the right port when I could hear the sound check provided by the software. Later, I bought small speaker system and it had matching color coded plugs, so it was an easy matter to plug it into the sound card.
The software for the card is easy to configure and use, very intuitive, providing a "mixing board" type interface for those who are a bit more advanced about their sounds than I am. They also provide pre-programmed settings for your sound (e.g., "rock", etc.) for lazy people like me.
WHAT I USE IT FOR: Music and games. I play my CDs, listen to Internet radio stations and play games (such as "Neverwinter Nights" that has a decent soundtrack and movies within the game).
I think I paid $40-$50 for this card. What a buy compared to what my boyfriend paid for his Soundblaster card ($250)!
