| soupcraze's Full Review: Phantom II Radar Detector |
The Rocky Mountain Phantom II and Rocky Mountain C212/C410 radars caught my attention while I was surfing the net. A pop-up ad came up that said that you can buy a radar/laser jammer. I had a feeling that this was a Rocky Mountain product, and yes, I was right. They are notorious for marketing crappy products that don't perform anything that they are promised to deliver. Once I saw the 30-Day money back guarantee, I decided to put up $249.00 oneach unit, therefore putting $500 on my credit card and have a little fun, and then return the two detectors. Here's what I found with the Rocky Mountain Phantom II:
-How I Did The Test-
*At this time, I purchased both the Rocky Mountain Phantom II and Rocky Mountain RMR-C212/C410. I mounted one at a time on my windsheild, and tested them both against the Valentine One, which is rated and is to my experience, the greatest radar detector on the market. I drove past a K-band speedpost on a road that is straight and had minimal traffic which allowed for the best radar detector sensitivity conditions.
-Promised To Jam?-
*The Rocky Mountain Phantom II promises to "scramble" radar and laser effectively. The website claims that the Rocky Mountain Phantom II will make you invisible to any speed trap. Holy Moses! Does this mean that I can toss out my worthless Valentine One? Not really. The first test that I performed with the Rocky Mountain Phantom II was finding a K-band speedpost . The one I managed to find was in a perfect area on a street that is straight and doesn't have much traffic. I started out about half a mile away. My Valentine One started going off while the Rocky Mountain Phantom II was still silent. When the post started coming into view, the Rocky Mountain Phantom II started going off. Then I passed the post, with my speed posted... That speaks for itself. I thought the Rocky Mountain Phantom II was supposed to save myself from speed traps, and it couldn't even jam a K-band speedpost. Then comes laser, and ultimate killer...
-Jamming Laser...? Uh Huh-
*The ultimate speed trap on the road is lidar guns. They prove to be effective because once you're hit, you're most likely a goner. The effective laser jammers come from brands such as Escort, Beltronics, and Blinder, and they do come in at a hefty price and need to be installed. But, the Rocky Mountain Phantom II promises to effectively jam laser. The way that Rocky Mountain claims that laser jamming is done is by creating an field of light in front of the car... This works if only the laws of physics are repealed. It's known in the laws of physics that as light travels and interferes with one light source, it only changes at the point of interference, and comes back as it was. This effectively proves that a laser jammer will not work through the windsheild... And oh yes, windsheilds also can reduce the amount of light entering and leaving, yes it's physics again. So it's a funny joke to say that the Rocky Mountain Phantom II can jam laser.
-The Price-
*It's funny how the Rocky Mountain Phantom II was selling at $249 just as the Rocky Mountain RMR-C212/C410 was going for $249 when the the latter is claimed to be a smaller and more powerful variant of the Phantom series. Ummm... ok. These marketing strategies make sense... But anyway, is the Rocky Mountain Phantom II worth $249? Well, if the C212/C410 is claimed to be better, then why would it be if they cost the same? But realistically speaking, none of these damn things work! Ok, let's forget about the so-called "scrambling" abilities, but talk about the sensitivity. The Rocky Mountain Phantom II had significantly worse range than that of the Valentine One. It also lacked on X-band performance when I drove around shopping centers and the Valentine One was going off insanely.
-Features-
*... Yeah. The Rocky Mountain Phantom II is a very cheap looking unit. It has the basic mute button and City/Highway mode switch. I think a little child can easily use this detector.
-The Verdict-
*This is stupidity at its finest. The Rocky Mountain Phantom II isn't just a big joke regarding its performance and promises, but it's also priced at the same price as its competitor that Rocky Mountain claims to be smaller and more efficient. Haha, that's just hilarious. If you want some real protection, go for Valentine One, or at around $249 (Actually for less), you can have a Beltronics Vector 985 that will deliver superb performance. The Rocky Mountain products do come with the ticket guarantee, but they will only pay within certain boundaries and up to a certain price. Thanks for the 30-Day money back guarantee, I had quite a bit of fun. And oh yes, both the detectors were taken back and I did get my money back :)
