“No One Cares About the Main Course When the Appetizer is Turds in a Blanket!
by madtheory | Mar 29 '01
Mad Theory returns to the laboratory in order to help you choose titles for your reviews. My conclusion? A rose by any other name still has thorns.

"Mad," you are incredible. Just when I thought I could make a writing comeback after a 20+ year hiatus, I run across a mere kid like you who puts me to shame. LOL!

Those who commented below have said it all... you are simply one of the best writers I've come across in a looooooong time.

Thanks for some very valuable tips,
Kay

I could not pass up reading an essay about review titles after seeing your use of that Newsradio quote-oh,you are too good. Is there a self improvement class, newsletter or audio cassette program you offer so as I can become not only a better writer but better human being as well? I bow to your greatness-you are simply one of the best writer that Epinions has to offer.

MT, my friend, you absofreakinlutely slay me, dude. This article was right on the money...if I see a title (yeah, even my own) that doesn't catch my interest, I just go "boooorrrring" and skip onto the next thing.

For instance, I'm a rock guy primarily, not hip-hop...but, you always seem to come up with catchy titles and your articles are well-written, so I read most of them anyway. Besides, I like knowing what's going on in other musical genres, even if they're not my primary ones (rock, prog, blues, jazz). A good article is a good article, and I can be open-minded enough to absorb something on a topic that is not my usual thing so long as the author is good.

Great writing par usual, man.

Peace,

Grez

Considering I have a terrible attention span I usually have a hard time reading an epinion thats any good length but your style seems to have a perfect balance of wit, style, insight and all around flow that holds my interest right till the last word. This was very entertaining and useful like all your epinions I have read so far.
Hope to see more reviews from you!

I loved this. Very observant. Only now, I'm not going to be able to read a single epinion again without saying to myself "Ah Ha! The Clever Title."

Of course, that's probably what you were going for.

Another great epinion.

Thanx,

I thought about using "Gargantuan, Heaving, Glistening Breasts!!!!" for every single article I ever wrote on here in the future...maybe I should try something else.

Great read, my man! - Craig

Brilliant! Right on the money! Love to do it!!

I have two questions:

1) Where would you put the title for this very piece on your very own scale?

2) Is there a place online that you know about & I don't where you can get the actual NewsRadio episode names? That would be great!!

Cheers,
Toots.

You made me realize how boring my titles are. I always tried to include the product name for search engines, didn't know that was no longer needed. Thanks for the tips. I'm going to see if I can come up with some better titles.

Applied the MadTheory theory... (Reply to this comment)
by movielover123
of opinion titleing, will let you know it it works. I was a bit disappointed with the response to my most recent opinion (tho some of my fave people read it which is cool), so I took your advice and re-titled. I think the counter's going to be spinning now!!! I almost considered applying the "lowest common denominator" method, but thought I'd try the catchy route instead. Thanks for a great, fun to read opinion.

Guilty as charged... (Reply to this comment)

#6.

However, there are some cases in which the name of the product should be in the review. In topics such as Site Reviews or Incoming Web Sites (both of which have been retired, I believe), the name of the web site should be in the title.

Also, with the current state of Education reviews, my first review has become unlinked from its topic (Caltech).

I remember back then. If you look, you can still bring up some of the old opinions at many search engines. However, my understanding is that members can no longer submit to search engines, so these titles coud be jazzed up a little. Thanks for the add'l info though! -mad

You really hit the head by its nail ;)

Just fyi: the reason some people simply retype the product mane as the opinion title is that during the time of the old Epinions, this was the most effective way to get hits from search engines.

Now I'm feeling really uncreative. Thanks so much. Just kidding! I think you hit the nail on the head with this.

There are some folks that would suggest a title need not be such fun...I happen to disagree. I'm all for a catchy title!

Looking forward to seeing more! ~Going to rewrite titles now~
