A few months ago one of my friends had a Christmas ornament party if you have never heard of one of these heres the skinny. You get together with your best Christmas ornament ideas and arrange a swap at the beginning of December. This is a great way to get 15 20 unique and hand crafted ornaments and add a little variety to your tree. Shes had these parties for several years and until two years ago I always passed, I mean come on it doesnt sound like a lot of fun and honestly all I could envision was a bunch of craft obsessed soccer moms jacked up on Starbucks coffee talking about how many locking stitches it took to make their mini quilts. Needless to say, I was really missing out on a lot. As a thank you gift the hostess handed out these cool sponges to everyone that attended along with some other small gifts. The idea of a fish shaped sponge wasnt something that really got me excited its a sponge in the shape of a fish. That all changed when I tried it out and fell in love with the shape of it as well as the way it help up to a lot of use. When it was on its last leg [or would that be last fin?] I wanted to get more of them but had a hard time finding them locally. The hostess of the party gave me the website address for Casabella and ever since then, Ive had these colorful fish in my sink!
Casabella Grippee Fish Sponge
These fish shaped sponges come in a variety of colors including blue, pink, teal, lime and yellow so no matter what color scheme you have going on in your kitchen, you are bound to find a few that will match. The shape resembles a fish but thats just the aesthetical quality. The shape allows you to get a good grip on it so you can clean your dishes, cups, pots and pans easier. One side of the sponge is soft and the other is a little rougher, essentially this is the same as the S.O.S. sponges that sell for about the same price. The real difference here is that the scouring side is white instead of green or blue and of course the shape.
The small slit in the tail fin allows you to hang it on your dish rack or faucet arm so it can drip dry, this to me is a great invention that I wish I would have thought of years ago. This wont completely eliminate stinky sponges but it will help to reduce the change of it getting that funky smell. As odd as this might sound, I also use this in the shower for getting dead skin off my feet and ankles. Since I wear high top tennis shoes to the gym and hiker boots for walking, my feet take a beating and I need to exfoliate them from time to time. Having this cute little sponge hanging from the shower head or shower caddy reminds me to treat me feet to a good scrubbing from time to time.
The size of the sponge is just right four and a half inches wide and three and a half inches high so if you have tiny hands or those of Frankenstein, the size will help you get a hold of it and allow you to jeep a good grip on it even when tackling greasy messy or a sink full of suds. My boys really like the size and shape too, they can grab a hold of it and wash out their glasses or wipe off their plates [a rare occurrence, but it does happen from time to time], rinse the sponge off and slide it back on the faucet arm. Everyone who has seen these sponges has commented on them and asked where to buy them and so far the only place Ive found them is on the internet at the Casabella site and a few third party cleaning supply sites [for more of course] so if you have found these at a retail store, please leave a comment so I can pass this information on to others.
Price
I ordered these directly from the website and saved a little cash on them. Instead of paying $1.99 a piece, I ordered the pack of six for $8.99 that reduces the price from $1.99 each to $1.49 each but Id suggest that you try one out before you spend the money on the six pack. These arent for everyone but those that have tried them really like the feel of them and the fact that they can be hung up to dry. To me these are worth the money and add a little extra touch to the kitchen. These work just as well as the plain dual sided sponges and are a little easier to grip due to the fish shape.
Durability
I do a lot of dishes through out the day and rarely run my dishwasher so on average I go through a sponge about every ten to fourteen days. I am the kind of person that hates to see dishes in the sink so I try to wash what ever is there when I pass through the kitchen. These last me about two weeks before I pitch them or recycle them to other areas of the house for cleaning. For the price, about the same as a comparable double sided sponge, I get a lot of use out of them and they dont retain smells from greasy jobs. They clean up nicely after tough chores and the scrubber side doesnt pill or fall apart. The slit in the tail fin doesnt warp or rip and holds the sponge in place if you decide to hang it up to air dry. There is a small cut out for the fishes mouth, this is great for getting the edges of plates or cups and allows you to really get in to those tough to read areas. This coupled with the other perks of the shape and two textured sides makes this a great functional sponge that adds a little humor to your housework.
The Bottom Line
I am not a fish freak nor do I collect fish but I really love these sponges! The fact that they can be hung up to dry, have dual sides for cleaning almost everything and handle a lot of wear make this worth the price for me. I highly suggest this to anyone that has any trouble gripping or holding things due to arthritis since the shape of the sponge allows you to get a good hold on it without having to exert a lot of pressure.
