| carl_lazarevic's Full Review: Sony PlayStation 2 Slimline Console |
We've reached a point now where the current contenders for chief consoles are soaring down in price, but still have a few years before their replacements arrive. Yet which one should you, the consumer, decide to get? That is up to you t decide, but in order to help you I've decided to review the current contenders in a way to show who would like what, because they each have their own advantages, depending on what you're looking for.
The Playstation 2 is the peoples choice of consoles. It's earned this though, being a solid, well rounded console with good grades in all of it's subjects.
Space Saver?
The PS2 has a decent size, a little larger than the first generation Playstation, and much much larger than a PSone, which means making space for play when it's placed Horizontally can be a pain, but, the PS2 can also be placed vertically. Supposedly it needs a special stand for this, I manage it just fine without one. When stored this way the Ps2 slides in right next to the TV and takes up a minute amount of space, less than a PSone even. This ability even makes finding storage space much easier. 5/5
Ease Of Use?
I've said it once, I'll say it again, "Whoever came up with the playstation Joypad is a genius!!!" The PS2 pad uses the exact same design as the PSone, only now all the buttons are analogue. Thumb buttons and back buttons are still perfectly placed, but you now have an even greater level of control. 5/5
Power?
128 Bits of greatness. It's not the most powerful 128 bit console out there, but it's still more powerful than a Dreamcast, which is now officially dead. With the right developers you will still get some outstanding results out of this bad boy. 4/5
Variety?
There are a lot of PS2 games available, in a lot of different genre's. Some like Jack And Daxter are suitable for children, while others such as Silent Hill 2 are strictly adults only. It fills out the board, and has the best variety yet, especially considering it's backward compatible with all of the Psone games. 5/5
Price?
$149.99 / £85 brand new or $98.51 / £55.92 makes it a reasonable price for a top of the range console. New games are $50 / £40 though, which makes it an expensive hobby. Though a few of the rent games have been released at $39.99 / £29.99 so it's moving the right way. You will likely to be able to pick up the older games for less though, plus being backward compatible with a PSone means you have instant access to all of those cheap games. 5/5
Overall?
The PS2 is the people's choice for a reason. Solid and durable, easy on the space and the widest range of games available. If you are buying for a family then this gives you the latest games for the big kids, who can afford them, and the older PSone games for the little kids who don't know any better. Plus you just know you'll want to play it too, just admit it.
Oh yeah, this baby also plays DVD movies at a very good quality, for the price, making it a good choice for film fans too.
This has been my entry into the Lean-N-Mean write-off.
