| endurance's Full Review: palmOne Tungsten T Handheld |
I purchased a used Tungsten|T (T|T) from my friend who is a fellow writer on HappyPalm.com. I got the new unit, and right away loaded it up with lots of applications, both new and old, some PalmOS5 enhanced, others not-so-compatible.
My views are skewed a bit, coming from a Sony Clie (T665C)handheld, it is geared a lot more towards Media and I had grown very spoiled by that fact. Built in MP3 processor, good battery life, quality screen, great compatiblity and more - enter the T|T:
Audio
With no 'offical' MP3 player built in, you are forced to either buy the kit from PalmOne, or purchase a 3rd party software. I picked the second, the nice part on that is my choice pTunes offered OGG support, which can become smaller than MP3 and gives you more space in the SD card.
The only quirk with any MP3 processing is doing active tasks. The audio would pop, and pause when you open or closed the grafiti slider - a small quirk, but one none the less. Audio worked, and battery life was only slightly less than the Clie, as the Clie model has a HOLD feature, which shuts off buttons, etc. so less battery useage - Palm hardware only offers the ability to shut off the screen.
Internet
This was my dream. On the road, cellphone, bluetooth. I was in heaven. I could check email with VersaMail (the built in client) and check websites with WebPro (the built in web browser) and it allowed me to be more mobile in the weekends without dragging a laptop around to check things for clients.
Now any person like myself who manages Linux based servers, SSH is a MUST - however until recently with the release of PalmOS 5.0 there was not many choices, enter TuSSH - PERFECT! I was able to use the T|T to connect to the linux server enviroment. So yet another perk moving from the Clie.
Video
I use Kinoma Video - I own the producer program, and its probably one of the best out there. On my Clie video is crisp, clear, and audio sounds great whereas on the T|T the audio was good, video was darker, and the quality was crisp, but the darkness made it hard to make out some things.
Overall
If your looking for a Media PDA along with a business PDA - the T|T is probably not your best choice, its a business machine plain and simple. It does great work managing a schedule, and keeping names. You could throw the ocasional video on or mp3 for casual listening, but its not a media work horse like my former Clie.
If your in the market for a good informational tool, and have some need for internet access with any type of Bluetooth enabled Phone or PC - this is a great starter unit for getting around.
