| daphnec's Full Review: St. John's Bay® Boot-Cut Jean |
When I took my middle-school daughter school shopping last August, I encouraged her to choose clothes that would easily transition from the warm Southern California months of September and October, on to the cooler months, as I usually replenish her wardrobe at Christmas. Blue jeans have been a staple of most wardrobes for the past several decades, and so, among all the stripes and flowers, we included a few pairs of jeans.
We bought a pair of St. John's Bay® Boot-Cut Jeans at a J.C.Penney store. The only drawback to buying in person, as opposed to using the catalog or ordering on line, is that catalogs usually have a greater variety of colors and sizes. We were able to find what we needed easily enough because my daughter chose dark blue. My children prefer to buy dark, stiff jeans as opposed to prewashed, because they like their jeans as dark as possible, and after a few washings, the prewashed jeans always seem to be nearly white.
Four months later, the St. John's Bay jeans have held their color better than other jeans that were purchased at the same time. They're still pretty dark, in spite of at least 25 or 30 washings.
Durability is "iffy." The jeans are basically intact, despite Physical Education, bike riding, etc. The only problem is that on the right side, just below the waistband, there is an area along the seam where there are several small horizontal tears. We have no idea how the holes got there.(Granted, I'm not all that careful with laundry.) It's not a big problem, because my daughter's shirts always seem to cover the spot, but it takes durability down to about a 3 on a scale of 1 to 5.
We bought the stretch boot cut jeans, as my daughter prefers the classic cut, and the really girly jeans have a tendency to be flared at the hem. The fit might have been better if we'd taken into account that the stretch jeans are a bit larger. We should have bought them a size smaller, as they didn't shrink much. My daughter resents having to wear a belt. The elasticity is especially good for such an active girl.
Would I buy the St. John's Bay Boot Cut Jeans again? Maybe, if I got a good deal. We paid about $20, which wasn't bad, but the holey area was a drawback.
On a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being best,
Color: 5
Accuracy of Size/Fit: 3.5
Durability: 3.5
Style: 5
Generally speaking, I recommend the product for those who like classic jeans.
