PC TV, The good, the bad, and the ugly

The Bottom Line: I recommend it to people with a tolerance and a fast, powerful computer. Or to anyone interested in video capture.

The ATI TV Wonder, a wonderful blend of computers and TV, but is it really worth it? I'll start with Pro's. This is TV right on your desktop. There is nothing better than that, except maybe free cable. The TV quality on this is excellent. You can watch in multiple different resolutions and also in full screen. The best part I'd have to say, is the fact that you can record TV onto your computer to watch, edit, burn etc. You can also run VCR's and DVD players through it so you can make your own movies on computer, then watch them whenever. Another good thing is that you can use multiple video inputs. You can go in through a cable line, a Super VHS (S-Video), and a composite input. Thus giving you multiple options. Now for the bad. This card was a pain in the rear to get working properly. I first installed it and went through the easy installation. Soon i tried to record something, finding only then that I had absolutely no audio recording. I'm not sure what was wrong, but somehow I eventually fixed it...no thanks to ATI. I continuously emailed the ATI tech support finding only to receive hundreds of auto responses and advertisements. They presented no help at all. So I figured that maybe they would have drivers on the page...of course they only had the set of drivers that came with it and a note at the bottom of the page stating that the ATI TV-Wonder was only compatible with the ATI TV-Wonder drivers and not the million other TV drivers they had. As soon as things were resolved however, I found that I enjoyed this product. The only slightly bad thing after that was finding that their .avi editor was pure crap. But that is easily fixable with a simple download. Overall, I would recommend this product to most people with some tolerance.
