My husband and I felt like we needed a safe place to keep our important papers and documents in. Everyone has things that need to be protected from fire or a burglary. We wanted something that wouldn’t take up a lot of room, but would have enough space inside to store everything that we needed to keep safe. We went to Walmart and begin looking at the various fire-safes that they had. The one that we decided on was the Sentry Fire-Safe S0100. We have found that it has given us plenty of room and are very happy with our purchase.
The safe that we purchased has a combination lock. There are some safes that have a key lock or an electronic lock. There are some that have a combination of more than one way to open it. We just wanted something basic. Our safe has a 1-hour fire protection. If your home were involved in a fire this safe would protect the contents inside if it were to burn for up to an hour. There are four live locking bolts.
Inside has plenty of room for everything we need to store. There is a shelf in the middle that divides the top area from the bottom area. That utilizes the space very well. It will hold folders and binders that are laid flat. We don’t have anything of great value in ours, but it gives me peace of mind knowing that our items are safe. It’s great for storing things such as the deed to our house, car titles, birth certificates, jewelry and other collectibles. We have plenty of room left for more things we may want to add in the future.
The safe is fixed on the bottom where it can be bolted to the floor. That is a nice addition so that you can protect against a burglar getting in and taking it. Then again if your house were to catch fire it would make it much harder for you to get the safe out of the house. It does not come with the hardware that is needed to bolt the safe to the floor.

Combinations:
You need to make sure that you put your combination in a safe place. Of course, do not keep it near the safe. That would defeat the purpose if you were to have a break in. If you lose your combination you can not get a new one by phone. To get the combination you must write down the safe’s model and serial number. Then send a notarized letter stating that you are the safe’s owner and a check or money order for $8.00.
When you first get your safe you should try the combination with the door open first. For safes with a three number combination here are the steps for opening your safe:
1. Turn the dial to the left where it will pass zero at least three times. Then stop on the first number of the combination.
2. Turn the dial to the right and stop the second time you reach the second number of your combination.
3. Turn the dial to the left and stop the first time it reaches the third number of your combination.
When you get to the third number you will feel that it starts to feel tight. The arm on the door will then open.
The safe is not intended to store any of the following:
firearms, ammunition, explosives, explosive devices, computer disks, audio-visual media, photo negatives or pearls.
It says to protect delicate items. The safe is subject to humidity. If you store items such as stamps they need to be in an airtight container.
Final Thoughts:
This safe is heavy so I needed my husband to lift it. It weighs almost 90 pounds. The Sentry Fire-Safe S0100 is shipped with a screw in the back of the door. This keeps the combination dial from moving and locking before you are ready to use it.
I am happy with our purchase of this safe. It is very easy for me to open. I have not had any problems. I feel more secure knowing that our important papers are safe from burglars or a fire. It’s a great feeling to know that your items are all together and are protected. I especially like that there is a shelf on the inside dividing the top from the bottom. This helps me to keep everything more organized. There are also hooks on the inside door that are great for hanging keys.
The Sentry Fire-Safe S0100 is perfect for a personal home safe. We bought ours several years ago. I believe that it was around $100, but I’m sure the price has changed since then. At the Sentry website it says that this item is available at either Walmart or Home Depot.
