| flash-hammer's Full Review: Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition for Se... |
Streetfighter 2 was a milestone in gaming. There is no argument against that. It was the sequel to a truly mediocre arcade fighter, in which you could only play as a white suited, Red haired karate man named Ryu, as he fought through a number of opponents to face the Seven-foot Thai monster known as Sagat. If you wanted to play against another human, they took the role of Ken. Ken was a man with blonde hair in a red karate suit. Him and Ryu had identical move sets.
Then, in the early 90s, SFs makers, Capcom put out its sequel. Streetfighter 2: The World Warrior was huge. It was a phenomenon. Even my parents know what Streetfighter 2 is. Nintendo got a great deal when they signed it up as an exclusive for their Super Nintendo Entertainment system, but it eventually did make its way onto the rival Sega Megadrive in the form of Streetfighter 2:Special Championship Edition.
The game is a one on one fighter, in which you select one of twelve fighters, and must defeat the eleven others, and yourself, to see an ending movie.
The thing that appealed to most gamers was the huge differences between how the characters played. Chun Li was lethal in her speed, but was slightly lacking in brute strength, however the hulking Zangief was the polar opposite.
The game was really what the 6 Button controller was designed for, with A,B and C being Light, Medium and Fierce kick attacks and X,Y and Z being Light ,Medium and Fierce punch attacks. If you were using the generic 3 Button pad, you had to press start to switch from 3 Punches to 3 Kicks. Naturally, this 3 Button option is horrible, and it really is recommended that you own a 6 Button before playing SF2.
The buttons all respond superbly, and the collision detection is spot on.
Graphically, the game is very good for its age, with fairly large characters, and nicely detailed backgrounds. The game has naturally lost some of its animation frames in the transition from arcade game to Sega cart, but it does a very good job.
The music is also very good for a 16-bit cart. The music is actually brilliant; I honestly regard it as the best music in any game. Ever. In the Dreamcast version of Capcom vs SNK, you can unlock the option to play music from SF2 in the game, one of my friends, who had not played a Streetfighter game since this one died out of popularity a good five years previously, instantly recognised the SF music and what stages it came from. That is the kind of quality we are talking about, songs that will stick in your head for a long time.
Unfortunately, the sound effects are a bit muffled. This is probably why people always get the names of the special moves wrong.
This game actually contains two versions of SF2.Hyper, which is the same as Streetfighter 2: Turbo that was released on the SNES, and allows you to change the games speed from one star to ten stars. The other is Champion, which really isnt all that special; other than it offers different coloured 2P costumes.
At the end of the day, Streetfighter 2, in any version, is a classic game. There was only one other version released for the Sega (Super Streetfighter 2), and unless you want the 4 new challengers that game contains, there really isnt all that much difference. If you own a Megadrive/Genesis you MUST own this or Super, because
well its Streetfighter 2, its brilliant.
