| obbop's Full Review: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 1012 Laser Printer |
The HP 1012 has been sitting on my desk for a couple months now. As of May 2004 it has churned out a couple hundred error-free, smudge-free, crinkle-free etc. pages.
I power-up the unit only when I need to print. I have left it on for several hours anticipating more printing. The lack of a cooling fan is nice since one doesn't have to listen to the extra noise. When I don't expect to print more I turn the unit off. THe on-off cycle does not appear to harm the unit. I have been unable to find any reports that leaving the unit on continuously or cycling it on and off causes any harm.
The 1012 installed quickly and easily with my Windows 98 SE system with a PIII and 128 MB of Ram.
So far, the printing output has been excellent. There is an "econo" mode that reduces the printing clarity but saves on toner; a handy feature. Using both 20 and 22 pound paper I have not tried a heavier paper yet.
The toner seems a tad expensive ($70 in my area) but the cost per sheet printed is less than the ink jet printing I used in the past. A plus with lasers is the lack of ink smudging, important for resumes, etc.
Other reports tell of problems when printing large numbers of pages due to overheating caused by the lack of a cooling fan. This is not a problem for me since I use the printer at home and print but a few pages at a time. A user printing large numbers of copies would likely be happier with a more expensive unit not limited by overheating.
Despite the limitations mentioned the HP 1012 is a good printer for the average at-home user. It's small size makes it non-intrusive compared to larger units and the printing quality is fine. Be aware that you need a USB port for the 1012 to connect to your computer.
