I'd like to give credit where credit is certainly due.
I no longer use Authorize.net, but I used it for 2.5 years while operating my online business. I sold the business in Nov 2003 and canceled the service in Jan 2004.
Setting up the account was done for me. I called the reseller, they got my paperwork (hardly anything, a few signatures) and about a week later I was up and running. I got an email from Authnet letting me know how to access their control panel and information on their API.
I ran some tests on the Virtual Terminal, everything was peachy. I used the VT for a while until I wrote my own interface using PHP+Mysql. It was INCREDIBLY easy to interface to their system using their API. They have documentation that walks you step by step, so a beginner (as long as they can program properly) can set it up with no problems.
I had zero downtime with Authnet. Anytime I needed to process (which was many thousands dollars a month on $10-$30 products), it was available. Funds were deposited by my merchant bank into my business account (different bank) in approximately 3 days after submitting the transaction. Deposits were made every day the two banks were open and transaction fee withdrawals were made at the same time as the deposits.
After I had canceled the account, I had various billing disputes with ex-customers that I needed to clear up. I needed access to my Authnet account after I had closed it. I simply called Authnet and requested a temporary reopening of my account. It was instant and it was free. I got my information and they had it closed in 24 hours ago. Fantastic!!
I recommend Authorize.Net to anyone and everyone I talk to who needs a merchant account. If you don't understand how to use Authorize.Net, you need to hire someone who knows the insides and out of ecommerce and have them show you the ropes. You'll see it's easy once you learn the terminology and process.
Also, Authorize.Net is a processing gateway. It doesn't handle your money or deposits. It's simply a way to interface to your merchant account, which is held at a bank. If you have problems with the merchant account (deposits, disputes, chargebacks, etc), contact the bank, not Auth.Net. If you have problems processing, that is where Auth.Net comes in.
I hope this is helpful to some of you and I want to state that I do not or have ever worked for Auth.Net. I'm simply a very satisfied customer. I know many, many more like me.
