| goldenaxe's Full Review: Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided for Windows |
I came to epinions for opinions about this game back in april, so now that I've been playing it for 4 Months, I thought I would make a very straightforward review for the total newbie to MMORPG's (Massively Multiplayer Online Rale Playing Games) looking to get into SWG (Star Wars Galaixies), and what to expect.
First of all, I've never played any online game save a few very short lived shooter sessions and racing sims. I have a very high speed wireless 2000kb/s internet connection, and a P4 2.8ghz PC with an 8XAGP Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti4200 video card. I decided I've waited long enough, and now was the time to get into a good MMORPG, I've since become quite familiar with the game, and I want other new online gamers to get a feel for what they're getting themselves into. So here's my mini guide to getting setup in the world of SWG:
When you buy the game, be VERY careful to inspect the box. Some #@$@#$ buy the software, steal the CD KEY and return the game resealed to get their money refunded. This happened to me, and there's no way any software vendor will refund your money if the box is opened. So make fully sure the box has it's circular clear plastic seal on both ends of the box, and that there is not another layer, or anything odd about the box. Mine had been resealed with wide clear tape, which was almost completely undetectable unless you look really closely.
Once you install the game, and have successfully entered your CD KEY, you will activate your account, and it will be valid for 30 days, if you like the game, you simply pay for more months before the 30 days expire.
When you first login, you will have to select a server. There are a couple of dozen servers to choose from, but they are all esentially the same. Unless you already know someone who plays SWG and know which server you want to pick, it is best to select a server that is "reccomended". My server is Lowca.
Once you select a server, you will het your character selection screen. This part has a LOT of selections, so take your time. You don't have to worry too much about what you look like, as other players who have chosen the "Image Designer" profession (an advanced part of the entertainer profession) can alter your appearance even further in game later if you so choose. You can choose from 8 species (Bothan, Human, Mon Calamari, Rodian, Trandoshan, Twi'lek, Wookiee, Zabrak) Just pick what you like, as you will be spending a LOT of time with each other! :) Selecting a profession isn't too crucial, as you can quickly pick up all of the professions you want for 100cr each in game simply by visiting a Sometimes the longest part of the character selection process; naming your character. Like selecting your species, This can't be changed later, so take your time, and even better, try to com up with something before you even start the character selection process. I actually got timed out by the login server one time just for taking too long.
When your character is done, you will be sent through a tutorial, there are no other players in the tutorial, and it's an excellent way to get a very basic understanding of how to get around and communicate. Once you are through with it, you will be sent to a planet, I think the option to select which starting planet is gone, and you will be sent to Tatooine, but it is the best place to start.
Once you are on the planet. You have no worries about people attacking or doing anything to you you don't want. You can only fight with other players if you Duel them. This is an option you both must select in order for it to work. Don't be fooled into accepting a duel, as the only thing it was give you is a fight. Some Players might try to trick you into dueling them so they can get some xp (experience).
You should go on the tour to find where the cantina, and medical facility is. Go inside and see what they look like, and don't worry about the people inside, they will be doing their own thing, and when the time comes, they will be very happy to help you.
If you have chosen to be a Marksman or Brawler (Scouts should pick up one of these professions asap): Don't worry about travelling around, You should try to just get your stats up a bit. The best thing to is go outside of the city walls, and look for some creatures that are living just outside. Attack them and get familiar with attacking. If they run up to you, don't run away, standing steady and attacking directly is the best move. Keep an eye on your health, and sit down untill it recovers, then keep killing the creatures. In Tatooine, look for Minor Worrt's, as they are fairly easy to kill, and you can gain xp quickly by killing a few dozen of them. Once you've qualified for a new skill, try to find a player that can teach you, use your community tab (ctrl-C) and search for players of the same profession. Ask them politely using the [ /tell nameofplayer yourmessage ] command, then reply to them using [ /r youreplyhere ]. Other players and eventually you, are more than happy to because the teaching player gains apprenticeship xp by doing it. Once you've gained at least the first or second level of your attack methed (rifles, pistols, carbines, unarmed, 1 handed, 2 handed, or polearms) you can then try a few missions from the mission terminal, that will make it easier for you. When using the medical facility and cantina, always tip the player who helps you. You should go to the cantina when your battle fatigue or BF gets to about 100. You should also go to the medical facility when you can see roughly 10% of your health and action bars are black at the end. Getting into a group can be good too, as many more advanced players sometimes give you free stuff or tips on playing the game. Getting into a large group and going to more harder planets can get you a lot of xp and money quickly. If you get into a group and your skills are not up to what the other players are doing, just tag along if they let you, and stick slose to the pack, you can still help no matter what the group is doing.
Medics: go to the medical facility, and become familiar with the hotkeys that allow you to heal other players. When you heal other players they will usually tip you for your services.
Entertainers: go to a cantina, and start dancing or playing music. Some cantinas are very desolate, and the best way to get XP, money, and friends, is to find a really REALLY busy cantina. Tatooine's best cantina is usually in Bestine. The Cantina in Theed on Naboo is hot, and the most popular by far on all the servers I've played has to be the cantina in Coronet on Corellia. The key to entertaining there is getting into a group. Preferably a very large group. This way, a tipical player who need to be have his BF healed will enter, click on a group member, and all the group members will recieve XP, and if that player tips someone in your group, you will get your cut of the tip. This ensures you will get noticed! Also, when you gain new levels in the profession, 9 out 10 times a player who can teach you will be in your group already! making it very simple to get your training for free!
Artisans: This profession is quite unique, and you will find yourself seeking out componenets to build objects. Once you've created things, you can sell them for credits.
The bazaar is a good place to get stuff, always check it to see if people are giving away things at very low prices, as some people who don't have a house or storage for extra items may simply give them away using the bazaar terminal. Many times weapons that originally were sold for 10, 15, 20000 credits will be quickly listed at the maximum value of 6000 allowed on the bazaar. this can be handy if you are certified to use the weapon that's listed. When you make a friend in the game, be sure to add them to your friends list in the community tab (ctrl-c) this will allow you to see when they are online, and you will be able to contact them.
BOTTOM LINE:
It's relatively good value, The game requires a lot of attention though, if you don't plan on playing it more that two or three times a week, you may not enjoy it. In 4 months I have played 4-5 times a week generally for between 1-3 hrs a night, with the longest time being occationally around 8-9 hrs straight on weekends. I have never met anyone that was rude in the game, almost everyone is friendly, and always willing to help ya out. The best gaming happens at night, usually very late into the night. If you don't like to (or can't) stay up very late, you won't really get into the game. If you can spare the time, you will probably find yourself playing ONLY this game and almost nothing else for weeks. There is always something to do, it would take quite a number of months to become bored with this game! and in that case, it would be time to move on to something else!! :)
