Severe Morning Sickness Remedies!
May 30 '01
The Bottom Line Morning sickness suggestions, specifically for the woman with severe morning sickness and those who care about her.
A year ago, I wrote a nice short review on morning sickness remedies. Now, celebrating th 12th week of my pregnancy while hovering over the toilet adds new dimension to the words "Morning sickness."
Why do we get morning sickness?
First of all, why do they call it morning sickness, if it strikes at all times of the day and night? Usually because during the night, while we are sleeping, our blood sugar drops ( because we are not eating) and when our pregnant bodies wake up... our tummies tell us something is wrong. That is one explanation of morning sickness.
Another reason for getting morning sickness at any time of the day, according to another source is due to the increase in pregnancy hormones during the first trimester. For most women, morning sickness lasts the first trimester and eases up for the duration of the pregnancy.
Occasionally, there are women who suffer more severe morning sickness. I am talking about the gagging, retching, all day long type of morning sickness that plagues me from the time that I get up until I go to bed again. This is not anything I would recommend, in fact I would not wish it on my enemy (if I had one.) This type of morning sickess actually has a name, for the life of me I can not remember it. I do know that it has kept me from work for over a month and keeps me in bed just about all day.
What to do if the green morning sickness monster strikes?
First of all, remain positive…as much as possible. I know, believe me I know how hard it is when you feel so horrible. But, my attitude is just as important as how well I feel and how well I look.
Second, try the things that sound good to you. If someone suggests graham crackers, and the smell makes you gag…ditch it! Your nose and your body know what’s best right now.
Third, keep in contact with your doctor or midwife and make sure they know exactly how bad you are feeling. There are medicines available (like Fenergren, which is what I am taking.) Also, it is very important that I do not get dehydrated or malnourished, so frequent testing of your urine will help ensure my health and the baby’s health!
Things I have tried or been told to try… Remember, when you get pregnant, everyone offers advice on everything!
Things that worked:
Fenergren suppositories. 25-50 mg. Makes me sleepy!
Fruit with higher water content- like cantalope, watermelon, etc. (Especially helpful when you can not get enough liquids down.)
Making sure my tummy is never empty… always keep crackers or cheese nearby for quick access.
Eating small amounts several times daily…like six to eight times a day.
Popsicles!
Eating a protein snack or meal just before going to bed at night…so that blood sugar does not drop so dramatically. (For example: Eating a small sandwich)
Sonic cherry limes. (yummy! Thank you honey!)
Taking prenatal vitamin on empty stomach last thing before going to bed with a sip of water.
Things that did not help me, but might help someone else:
Crackers or hard candy before getting out of bed. Graham crackers, ginger snaps, saltines or hard candy like jolly ranchers.
Taking prenatal at any other time or with full tummy.
Lemon drops or lemon heads candy.
Ginger tea. Peppermint tea. Pregnancy tea.
Ways others can help:
Bring over dinner for the family, so mom to be does not have to worry about dinner! (and dad does not have to cook on top of taking care of mom.)
Supportive calls, cards and notes. Visits are harder because when you are lying in bed all day, you don’t feel quite up to company.
Offer to watch the other kids for an afternoon or evening.
Offer to pick up groceries, run errands ,etc.
These offers blesses the sick mother to be and her significant other.
The most important thing to remember, is that it will not last forever. I know that is hard to believe, especially right now when my second trimester is approaching with no relief in sight. But it will end and I will have a healthy baby soon!!! If you are suffering from morning sickness of any kind, know I am thinking of you too!
