Pros: The Navi-roller and the big screen!
Cons: Oh so slow...
The Bottom Line: Being a great phone once, today there are better options. The best thing about it, which I'd like to see on the new models too, is the Navi-Roller.

| KMKarlsson's Full Review: Nokia 7110 GSM Cellular Phone |
Well, I should probably start off by telling a rather important piece of information. I used to be (and still am) a fan of Ericsson products. Probably it partly has to do with the fact that I am a Swede and therefore favouring Ericsson over Nokia.
To begin with my feeling about this telephone was that it was very awkward to use, that it was not intuitive and that it's navigation was hard to learn. Since my first encounter I have changed my mind slightly. I still feel it is not the most user intuitive interface around, although I have spoken to many people stating the opposite. I guess the truth of the matter is that you get used to one way of navigation and prefer it since you know it. Some people say that the Ericsson navigational systems are more suitable for techie people and that Nokia's suits "normal" people better. I don't know if that is true. What is common and familiar is considered better - that is my interpretation.
After learning the navigation basics of the Nokia 7110, I have accepted it, even though I still find some things better on the Ericsson, like the fact that I can make short cuts in the navigation on the Ericsson phones. One example of this is for instance that you can start to spell the name you are searching for in the address book, instead of selecting the menu entry first. Small thing, but convenient when you get used to it. I miss that in the Nokia 7110.
There are however things in the Nokia 7110 I have learned not to be able to live without anymore. The most impressive invention on the Nokia 7110 is the Navi-Roller! Such a simple solution, a roller or wheel for scrolling up and down, instead of up and down buttons. So simple, yet so useful and addictive. I just love it, and miss it as soon as I use another phone. For some reason, which I for the world cannot comprehend, Nokia has not used the Navi-Roller in any subsequent phones after the 7110. Why not? It is great. Makes the navigation both using WAP-services (which you rarely do) and scrolling through the menu options, so much easier.
WAP-services. Right. This was one of the first devices to come to the market with the WAP-technology. To be honest, I used the feature to begin with, but since it is very slow and also expensive (since you have to be connected through out the session at regular air time rates), I rarely use it. It is an interesting technology, however, not mature. I'm looking forward to trying out the new GPRS-technology, which should solve some of the issues at least partly.
My over-all judgement of the phone is that it is more than ok. Still there are some small things missing to make it a top class product.
Sure, it is cool to be able to do the "Matrix-thing", by pressing the release button and hearing the sound of the sliding cover as it springs to position. Well, at least it used to feel cool, but I'm sure I would miss it in another phone.
The size of the phone is quite ok. I am not the kind of person that likes the really small phones; I prefer to have something to hold. Yet, it should be light. In my view the Nokia 7110 makes a good combination of size and weight in this sense.
Since I usually re-charge my phone every night, the stand-by time is not as important as the talk time. Both are definitely ok. Being an extensive user of the mobile phone services, I have seldom found myself lacking power for the Nokia. It would probably be ok to charge every two-three days, but I prefer to have a fully charged battery at all times.
One thing. When I first got the phone, I found it hard to place the earphone piece correctly to my ear. Sounds confusing, but it is really essential that the earphone is placed in a rather exact position by your ear to be able to hear anything at all. One learns rather quickly, but it was an annoying experience to start with.
Before ending the review, I should explain the title of it. The Nokia 7110 is very slow in presenting some of its functions. Especially this is true for the SMS/Short Message lists, that are sometimes so slow, that you get bored waiting. I have actually given up some SMS information services because of the slow process of reading them and erasing them afterwards. I have never understood why this is the case.
The OS of the phone is not 100% stable either, even though it is now (after another upgrade) almost ok. Sometimes the display turns mirrored!! I've never seen anything like it before, and people I tell usually don't believe it. The first time it happened I thought I was loosing it. It has happened again though, and I have been able to show the "feature" for others too, so I know it is not me...
Finally, I like the phone. I'm sure I will find a new one better in the near future. I do, however, really like the phone, and would have recommended it earlier, but not today. The Navi-roller would be the reason, but today there are many other phones with better spec:s than this one.
The Nokia 7110 is a classic, though!
