The Bottom Line Isn't your life in need of a little mush right about now?
Maybe it's because it's summertime (insert chirping birds)...Maybe it's that I have a great guy who reminds me daily why love stories are made (insert "awww"s here)... Maybe I'm just in a sappy mood and need to do more writing and less oozing.... sorry...
Onto my favorites:
He Said, She Said (1991)
Who says opposites don't attract?? The classic tale of two newspaper journalists, Dan and Lorie (Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth Perkins), who've always seen every issue from opposite angles, suddenly find themselves seeing the issue of themselves as a couple much the same, only from completely different gender perspectives. Shoved into doing what is first a pro/con newspaper column with their opposing views, they soon move into a television spot as well as relationship troubles leading up to Lorie's vicious assault on Dan with a coffee cup (okay, maybe it's not really vicious... I was just trying to add some action).
The Wedding Singer (1998)
Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore
Yes kids, it's the cheesy 80's memorial to big hair, poofy clothing and great music...set to the story of two people looking for love in the wrong people (her name would have been Julia Gulia for pete's sake!!!) but, never fear, after a teary love song sung over the airplane loud speaker from first class to coach *and* a few key moves from 'Billy Idol', all is right with the world.
The Princess Bride (1987)
Who can resist the fairytale of Buttercup (Robin Wright) and Wesley (Cary Elwes) who lived in the time of pirates and castles and sword fights. After believing that her love is gone, Buttercup is forced into becoming engaged to the evil Prince Humperdink. But Wesley is not dead... he has become the Dreaded Pirate Roberts and returns to find his love and rescue her. As you wish.
Message in a Bottle (1999)
Robin Wright, Kevin Costner, Paul Newman
Getting back to newspaper people...while on a quick vacation, a newspaper columnist, Theresa, finds a message in a bottle out on the beach on her run one day and decides to investigate. Her searching finds her two more bottles on the same stationary and eventually leads her to a lonely man, Garret (Costner) in a small little fishing town. Theresa realizes he's lost his wife, whom the letters are written to, and the pair begin to get close. She awakens something in Garret that he didn't think he'd feel again, but the pair have many more obstacles. I refuse to tell you the ending of this one but I will say it's one of the most unpredictable movies I've ever seen, which added to why I loved it.
When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan
Ahh, the classic "boy and girl not friends to start with become friends over the years then wonder if they should be something more but then after they try it it feels weird so they try to just be friends again" story. Lucky they just realize they are meant to be together at the end and fall in love. *sigh*
Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan
In an attempt to find his dad a new wife, Jonah (Ross Malinger) calls a nationally syndicated radio show. Eventually the show's host gets his dad, Sam (Hanks) talking as well and women all over the country begin to believe they are the one for him and send their letters to him in Seattle... including Annie (Ryan) who lives in New York. After a few twists of fate (and a cross country flight or two) a meeting is set up between the pair on top of the Empire State Building (you know...An Affair to Remember) and after even a few more twists the meeting takes place and all is right in the world again... of course.
Pretty Woman (1990)
Richard Gere, Julia Roberts
Okay, okay... I realize I probably don't need to recap this one but lets pretend you've been living in a remote cabin up in the colds of some lost place for the past 11 or so years (hey, I feel your pain... Wyoming is pretty remote and cold a lot of the time as well). Anyhow... this is the tale of the guy who makes the fatal mistake of asking the mouthy hooker for directions in Los Angeles. One thing leads to another and he eventually "purchases" her for the night... only to find out that he needs a no-strings date for most of the week... so he "purchases" her for the week. And you know how it is when you spend a week with someone you are supposed to be with. Despite the life differences, the pair fall in love and live happily ever after.
Made in Heaven (1987)
Timothy Hutton, Kelly McGillis
What would happen if you fell in love in Heaven and suddenly your love was sent back to earth? What would happen if you were sent back to find her but were only given 30 years to do so and no memory of your time in Heaven together? When Mike dies and meets Annie in Heaven, he gets to share all about earth with her because she's a new soul and eventually the two fall in love. Can soulmates really find their halves back on earth?
p.s. A little extra trivia about this movie... the smoking, grumbly male angel, Emmett, that sends them back to earth is not listed in the cast during the credits. Emmett is actually played by Debra Winger.
Mr. Wonderful (1993)
Not that I'd ever wish this for myself, but the concept is sweet. Gus (Matt Dillon) and Leonora (Annabella Sciorra) are trying to be divorced. The trouble is that Gus doesn't want to pay alimony to Nora anymore (so he can go in on a bowling alley with his buddies). So Gus decides to help Nora find her true love and next husband...only to fall back in love with her himself. While not overly unpredictable, the movie gives thought to whether or not you can go back and love again.
Bed of Roses (1996)
The ultimate love story (see my related epinion on the movie itself). The V.P. (Mary Stuart Masterson) who doesn't believe she deserves or is capable of love is wooed by the romantic florist (Christian Slater) who is surrounded by it and wants her to be a part of it with him.
Now go rent some of these movies, send the kids to Aunt Sally's and snuggle up to your sweetie... isn't your life in need of a little mush right about now???
