Re: Separating two "stuck" photographic filters (Reply to this comment)

Wow! I tried to part the UV filter and the polarizer today and was unable to. Then I tried this rubber band trick and indeed, it was very easy to separate them. Thanks a lot!

Separating two "stuck" photographic filters (Reply to this comment)

you said, "At the same time, once you tighten it, it is difficult to separate the two I have to remove both from the lens and then use the force to part them. Thus, I try to rotate the polarizer ring in the direction of tightening."
Try this -- get a thick wide rubber band (if you keep it in the plastic case with the polarizing filter it will keep the filter from sliding around in the case) and place the rubber band over the rotating end of the polarizer (make sure it covers both the rotating end and the non rotating base)-- grip very tightly in one hand (left hand if you're a righty) and grip the UV filter firmly but not tightly with the other hand and apply steady (but not heavy) pressure -- you'll be amazed at how easily the two come apart.

Another added plus . . . . (Reply to this comment)

You're absolutely right about:
"The UV filter is supposed to reduce the effect of ultra-violet (invisible part of the spectrum) light on the film and thus reduce the haze. It is often used as a cheap lens protector, and I always try to keep it on my lens."
An added plus is that it is so much easier to clean a filter lens that can be easily removed from the front lens mount than trying to be careful in cleaning a lens mounted in a bulky barrel.
