Tired of Buying Mattress Sets? Try A Futon Instead!
Jun 05 '01
The Bottom Line If you have children or adults who seemingly break or wear out mattress sets frequently, a futon is a great idea for mattress set replacement.
I have two growing boys, and through the past five years, I have had an increasingly difficult time with their beds with finding a good quality mattress for each one of them.
In the case of my oldest son, within the past five years he's grown from a chunky little boy to a big strapping defensive lineman weighing over 300 pounds. Needless to say, finding a quality mattress has been a challenge for me to meet his needs.
After throwing out two mattress and box spring sets within two years, I seriously thought about just having him sleep on the floor. He was forever thrashing in bed, sitting on the corner of the bed to do things like get dressed, and well, it seemed to me that no matter what I bought either the bed frame would bend and the box springs would break.
However, I don't know of any mother who really wants their child to sleep on the floor! So, last summer I decided to go on a massive search to find some kind of different kind of bed for him to sleep on. After speaking to his father, who has him for the entire summer, I discovered that my son was sleeping in a trundle bed there. However, I could not find a trundle bed big enough in our area and was losing hope.
So, as a last act of desperation, I again went into one of the newer mattress shops in order to try to get some advice on what to do with my child's bedding situation.
As soon as I walked in the door, I saw the solution staring me in the face. There on display was an absolutely beautiful futon set, full sized, custom crafted in wood. After sitting on the set and checking out the construction, I discovered that it was a quite sturdy piece of furniture that I believed would be just as durable as a sofa or chair.
Doing more research on the mattresses for the futon frame, I discovered that I could get a very high quality mattress guaranteed for fifteen years to fit the frame and that the total amount of this set would be about $460.
As a bold decision, I decided to purchase the futon without consulting my son in this decision. He was out of state at the time and I needed to get bedding for him before he came back because his other mattress set was totally shot. I figured that the futon would be more useful for him because he could entertain his friends in his room and have them sit without all of them having to drag chairs in there or sit on a regular bed.
Needless to say, my thoughts were correct. After returning home, my son fell in love with it and we went immediately to the store to get slipcovers for it as well as decorative pillows. He's had his futon now for one year and it's still in like new condition which is totally amazing considering his past experiences with bedding.
Now, his younger brother is getting larger and has now broken a few bed frames (he jumps on his all the time!), so I am also considering purchasing a futon for his use. Naturally, I will again go for the higher quality one because I would like for that one to last a long time as well.
If you are having problems with children or anyone in your family breaking bedding because of their weight or just general nature as my youngest son, I encourage you to take a look at purchasing a futon instead of a regular mattress set for your bedroom. Not only do these sets seem to have a higher durability than regular mattress sets, but they are attractive additions to enhance one's bedroom.
For those of you who are not familiar with what a futon is, I'll give you a brief description now. A futon is a bed that can be folded upwards to form a chair or sofa when it is not being slept on. There are decorative covers that can be used with the futon to make it more attractive for living room use, if you wish. At night, they are folded down and are used as a bed.
