Last February I was looking for a laptop for college and, admittedly, one that could sustain my gaming hobby for the next four to five years. So I was looking for both power and affordability . After searching the web for a few weeks for the best computer I could get for the best price, I found Power Notebooks.com. The quote "We live to serve Him, and you!" on their front page was weird, I thought, but they simply offered the best deal on the best equipment I could find.
Power Notebooks.com, as one can see by their name, specializes in notebook computers. There are no desktops here. Only a wide variety of laptops and laptop accessories. The website was relatively easy to navigate. The pages where the variety of notebook options are shown could be cleaned up a bit, but the page where you can customize your computer in clean and easy to use. The rest of the site is easy to use as well, if not the prettiest website you've ever seen.
I ended up buying a Sager NP5680 laptop from them, easily customized to my specifications using their website. The buying process went very smoothly. The sales people were helpful and friendly, and my computer came the day it was supposed to. I payed by Bank Wire Transfer to be eligible for a 2.5% discount. To get the discount you need to pay by Bank Wire Transfer, Cashier's Check, or Money Order. Credit Cards are also accepted but won't get you the discount. A few weeks after I got the computer, I received a personal e-mail from one of people working there, asking me how the computer was and if I had any concerns or questions. I asked a few questions and received a reply the next day. Overall, superb service.
Here is what I bought, and what I paid for it:
15" UXGA "WideAngles" TFT Active Matrix w/ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 PRO TURBO w/128MB DDR
3.2GHz Hyper-Threading Intel Pentium 4 Processor w/512k L2 Cache - 800MHz System Bus Speed
60GB Ultra ATA/100 Hard Drive at 5,400 RPM
1,024MB (2 SODIMMS) PC3200 DDR400
8X DVD/24x10x24 CD-RW
3.5" 1.44MB Floppy Disk Drive
Built-in IEEE 1394 (Firewire)
Built-in 56k V.90 Modem
Built-in 10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet LAN w/RJ-45 Jack
Built-in 802.11g Wireless LAN
Smart Li-ion Battery
Windows XP Professional
Full Range Auto Switching AC Adapter
1-Year Parts and Labor, Lifetime Telephone Technical Support
For all that, I paid $2,315, plus $30 shipping.
Back in February, that was an awesome computer for an awesome price. (The computer is still really good, if I do say so myself. Runs Half-Life 2 very well with the settings on high.) They blew companies like Alienware, Falcon Northwest, and Dell out of the water with that price, and were still cheaper than other alternatives, like Compaq and all other online laptop dealers I could find.
So you may be thinking: "What's the catch?"
I've been trying to find one for the past ten months, and have yet to find one. Not once has anything gone remotely wrong with my computer, so I've never had to use their technical support, but from what I've seen on their forums, the people that work their know their stuff, are helpful, and are friendly to boot. The computer runs great, the only problem is that it can get quite loud when running heavy duty programs because the fans are working hard to keep the thing cool. The thing is also 10 pounds, but that's the price you have to pay to have the most powerful hardware packed into a small notebook.
Overall, I recommend this company to anyone looking for a good laptop computer. The service and the products are both top-notch.
