I thought ceramic cooktops were easier to clean!

Pros: Gets burnt chunks up easily
Cons: Doesn't get flat stains well at all.
The Bottom Line: This is handy to have but not necessary.

I have been a cooking fool this month and apparently a messy one too! I have found that I am getting tired of cleaning my ceramic cooktop. I do use Cerama Bryte cleaner which is a big help but I always wonder if I’m rubbing and scrubbing too hard for the black burned on marks on the cooktop. Additionally, if I had a scraper I could just scrape that chunk right off and be on my way without going through the hassle of getting the cleaner out. If you want to get your job done quickly you have to have the right tools for the job. When I saw the scraper at Home Depot for only $4.00 I thought it would be worth a try.
I bought the scraper knowing that it was certified to be used on my ceramic cooktop because I have already researched the Cerama Bryte brand. When I got home I immediately wanted to try it mostly because I was suppose to clean the stovetop before I left.
I didn’t read the package at all when I was at the store, I just tossed it in the basket. When I opened the package I was looking at this razor blade on the end of this plastic handle and thought I must have bought the wrong product because there was no way that I was going to put a razor on my delicate surface!
I took a look at the package again to verify that it was for ceramic cooktops, and looked closely at the stove pictured on the package which was a ceramic cooktop. I briefly looked over the instructions and I wasn’t certain that I knew how to use it so I called my husband over to get his opinion because I’m not fond of expensive mistakes.
He thought it was odd to put a razor on the surface as well and began to read the instructions. I took a look at the razor again and put my finger on it and realized that it wasn’t really that sharp. I let my husband do the test to see if it would scratch the surface. He started with a burnt black splotch which came up instantly. He continued scraping in a straight line as he was showing me how to use it. We looked at the scraper after he was done with the few scrapes in what we assumed to be a clean area and noticed it brought up junk we didn’t even see.
The scraper is basically a piece of plastic with a razor on the end. The front and back of the scraper is easy to identify. With the scraper face up, you glide it gently across the cooktop surface at a 30 degree angle. It is comparable to using a paint scraper. Once the deposits are scraped the cooktop can be cleaned as usual. I am not sure how long the blade will last; it will definitely depend on how often you use it. The blade in the scraper can easily be replaced.
After a few days the thrill of the new toy wears off and then you just have another item floating around to find. It does a really good job of taking care of a big ugly mess that has a raised texture to it but once the surface of the burned area is gone the scraper is more of a burden. It does not get the flat burns at all and the Cerama Bryte cleaner has to come out anyway. I think the yellow cleaning pads that are also marketed for ceramic cooktops are also more effective at removing burns than the scraper is.
This is a pretty simple tool in design, and equally easy to use. It saves a lot of time cleaning the burnt crusty marks on the cooktop if there is a large burn like a spill over. If I would have been able to try this product before buying I would not have bought it. I suppose I will have my stove for a very long time so I will have plenty of time to get my $4 worth out of this product; you never know when it will come in handy.
