Comfort Inn & Suites North Conway, NH - Quality Skiing, Here We Come!

The Bottom Line: For families wanting a great location at a decent price, this is a great place to stay in North Conway. Just don't be surprised if you get woken up!

When we had the opportunity to take an extra weekend this year for skiing, my daughters jumped at the chance and I complied. It also turned out to be a great time to socialize with friends we’ve made in this area of New England. North Conway, NH lies in the heart of the Mount Washington Valley. In the summer, it’s a town known for its many outlet stores and beautiful scenery. In the winter, there are no less than six mountains within a short drive from the town.
I elected to make a reservation at the Comfort Inn & Suites right in town, figuring that would give us a good proximity to all the ski resorts. It’s easy to find, right on Route 16 which is the main thoroughfare through the town. It also sits right next to a mini-golf course which was closed in the winter, but very convenient in the summer. The building is fairly new and easy to spot from the road.
Although our confirmation at the Comfort Inn & Suites read 4 PM for check-in, when we arrived just shy of 3 PM on a Friday we were able to check-in. I was asked to show my AAA card, something I’d never had happen even when booking the AAA rates. The Comfort Inn & Suites is three stories high and we were on the second floor. All of the rooms enter off of interior corridors, something I always appreciate for the security, especially when traveling by myself with my children.
I sprung for the extra $10 a night to have a suite room. This mean we had two queen beds in the room. In addition, there was an alcove with a coffee table and couch, as well as a bench for out suitcase. This gave the feeling of being a separate seating area, although when I would get up in the morning and turn on the light here to read it would still shine on those sleeping nearby. The couch was a convertible and opened out to a double-sized bed if need be.
In the room with the queen beds, there was a table and chairs with a floor lamp. The phone on the table had a jack for a modem connection, although the Comfort Inn & Suites boasts free WIFI. There was also a telephone on a nightstand between the beds as well as an alarm clock. A credenza sat opposite the beds with six drawers - plenty of space for clothing if we were staying more than two nights. The television was on top of the credenza with a good selection of stations.
There was a “kitchen area” which consisted of a dorm-sized refrigerator under a counter. The counter had a small sink built into it and a microwave and 4-cup coffee-maker on top. There were supplies for the coffee-maker as well. A closet was next to it with plenty of room for us to hang up all of our skiing clothes.
The bathroom was nice and roomy. On the counter-top in there was a basket with the usual shampoos, lotion, and soap. There also was a sewing kit, q-tips, a shower cap, and a special cloth to use for makeup removal. The shower functioned well and had adjustments for various intensities of the spray.
I did have some issues with the noise. It was snowing like crazy while we were there. One morning I was awakened at 3AM hearing the plows outside on the road. Our room was over the lobby and not particularly close to the road. Also I could hear other families on the floor we were on, mostly opening and closing doors and the like. I also had the heat turned off in our room, but the room stayed quite warm. It was a bit warmer than I liked for sleeping, and there was no way to get the room cooler without switching on air conditioning.
The indoor pool downstairs was nice. It was a large free-form size going from 3 feet deep to five feet deep. There’s a palm tree around the pool which had a shower in it. My daughters got a real kick out of this. The only thing I really missed was a Jacuzzi. In the lobby was also the breakfast room where a continental breakfast was served every morning, Here I found coffee, tea, cocoa, apple juice, orange juice, bagels, donuts, toast, English muffins, fruit, cold cereal, and oatmeal. On mornings during the week a USA Today newspaper was available - on the weekends a Conway Daily Sun was delivered to our door.
Right next door was a small plaza with a club as well as a Chinese restaurant. A 7-11 and gas station was right beyond it, within easy walking distance. This was great when I needed stomach medicine for my one daughter in the middle of the night.
The front desk was very helpful. Although my kids were skiing with an instructor friend of ours, there were some terrific packages they could have set up for us if we wanted it. They also were helpful with restaurant recommendations, although again I had the benefit of knowing someone from the area.
I would probably stay here again if I had to, although I found out our friends have a connection to another hotel in the area and I could probably get terrific rates there. Still, for anyone else I think you can do all right here. Even in season the rates are reasonable, and for families having the indoor pool is a big plus. The location is fantastic to everything in the Mount Washington Valley.
