| melissasrn's Full Review: LG VX6100 Cellular Phone |
Late last year in December 2004, my husband and I decided it was past time to upgrade our old Motorola cell phones (both the Motorola V120c and the Motorola 120e) as well as our old calling plan as our needs were growing but our current options were not. And at the same time, we wanted to add another line as a Christmas gift for our then 14 year old daughter, Kelsey, as she'd been bugging us for ages to let her have her own cell phone since all her friends already owned them. So when we saw the Verizon Wireless commercials on TV promoting a "Buy One, Get up to Three Free" deal they were offering at the time on this LG VX6100 Cellular Phone, we knew it was the perfect time to sign up for their America's Choice calling plan. For not only would all three of us have our own line and new flip phone each, but we'd also have cool camera phones that are so popular for the moment. Read on to find out more about this affordable yet trendy option we are enjoying in triplicate so far.
~~~The Camera/Flip Phone~~~
I've previously owned three other mobile phones before purchasing this LG VX6100 Cellular Phone, and this one is easily the best one I've had yet! Of course rapidly advancing electronic technology is the obvious reason since we typically upgrade every 2 to 3 years. According to product advertising: This handset takes technology one step further by adding several hot new upgrades, including tri-mode coverage, a sliding lens cover, embedded flash, and an external LCD with self-portrait capability. In addition, voice-activated dialing is upgraded with LGs Voice Command with speaker phone and Driving Mode. Included Accessories: Standard Lithium-Ion Battery, Home Charger, Holster. The phone itself is definitely the smallest I've owned yet and is the first camera/flip phone I've had experience with, so I've had lots of fun playing with my new phone and learning the new features. It's a mere 3 1/2 inches long, although the small immobile antenna adds another inch on the side. My phone is silver in color with black trim, so while it doesn't appear to be anything fancy at first glance, looks can be deceiving. The small wireless device fits easily in my scrub pocket at work or inside the zipper portion of my purse, so portability is definitely a plus (although with the side "mode" buttons, it's easy to accidentally change modes while the phone is in my pocket). I use mine without the holster accessory, but my husband prefers it as he'd rather clip his phone onto his belt. And since the buttons are covered when the phone is closed, dialing wrong numbers by accident is a thing of the past, so a key lock feature is no longer needed. The camera feature has a 4X digital zoom with build in flash and takes color photos, which can be stored on the phone or emailed to a friend. Both the lens (as well as the protective sliding cover) and the outside display are located on the front of the phone. So the date and time are always displayed when the phone is turned on. And with the handy caller-ID feature, you know who's calling before even flipping the phone open. The inside display screen is in color, so backgrounds and pictures are vibrant and easy to see. Many more handy options like popular text messaging, included screen icons, multiple ring tones, voice mail, and web access only scratch the surface of everything that's offered. So overall, this LG VX6100 Cellular Phone easily meets my needs even before I get to the nitty gritty details.
~~~Price & Availability~~~
Purchase this LG VX6100 Cellular Phone currently for $49.99 at Verizon Wireless with a 2 year contract (or $99.99 with a 1 year contract). There's also a special "Buy One, Get 1 Free" promotion going on, so shoppers can get two of these cool camera/flip phones for the price of one. We really lucked out when we got our three phones for the price of one, so it's much more convenient and cost effective for all of us to keep in touch with family and friends now using the "America's Choice Family Share" calling plan. While the camera feature is one I only use occasionally, my teenager daughter uses hers quite a bit and is a pro now at text messaging her friends with this phone's easy set up. I have taken several pictures though along the way, which can be deleted until you take one you like, and have my favorite one of my youngest son set as my main inside display wallpaper. You can even take self-portraits if desired with just the press of a button. Picture ID's can even be assigned to those in your contacts list, as well as specific ring tones assigned to each, so personalizing your phone is easy to do. This way, I have no trouble distinguishing my phone from my husband's or daughter's as well all have different photos placed on our main display. ~~~Phone Experience & Many Features~~~
It takes very little technical know-how to get started using this LG VX6100 Mobile Phone, so it's an excellent choice for beginners or those that use a cellular phone mostly for recreational use verses business. Of course it always helps to read the included users guide, which is printed in both English and Spanish before beginning. Under the Menu option, there are nine broad features available for access: (1)Camera: take PIX, gallery, PIX place, (2)Contacts: list contacts, new number, new email, groups, speed dials, my VCard, (3)Recent Calls: dialed calls, received calls, missed calls, erase calls, call timer, KB counter, (4)Messages: voice mail, new TXT msg, new PIX msg, inbox, outbox, saved, msg settings, erase all, (5)Get It Now: get it now, get information, (6)Mobile Web: start browser, web messages, web alerts, (7)Media: images, sounds, message objects, (8)Tools: voice commands, schedule, alarm clock, voice memo, notepad, EZ tip calc, calculator, world clock, (9)Settings: sounds, display, system, security, call setup, data settings, voice services, location, phone info. With so many things this phone actually does besides places and receives calls, it will take awhile to get to know all the features comfortably. I use mine as my alarm clock in the morning as this phone will store up to four separate times (with different ring tones if desired). Any missed calls or received text messages will show up on the front data display so keeping current on your phone's activity is simple. Choose a volume setting from low to high to vibrate, depending on where you are and how discreet you need to be. I keep mine set to Manner Mode while working with patients so that I'm the only one aware of the vibration in my pocket. That way I can ignore the call if need be until a more appropriate time to receive it occurs. You can also set the phone to Driving Mode and take advantage of the convenient speaker feature, which makes talking while driving much safer as distracted driving is a big safety issue these days. Get familiar with the large OK button as you'll be pressing it alot when using this LG VX6100 Cellular Phone with it's multiple modes and features.

~~~Overall Recommendation~~~
Now that I've had a good 5 months experience using my new LG VX6100 Cellular Phone, I can confidently recommend it to the casual user looking for all the latest cool extra features this model offers. Not only can you download practically any song or ring tone you'd like from the Get It Now feature (my current favorite I use alot is Lonely No More by Rob Thomas), but you can also purchase games and send and receive both picture and text messages with ease. Of course all of these things will cost extra on your wireless plan, so if you could care less about all the fancy features, then pick a more basic model if "just" talking is all you plan to do. I'm impressed with both the reception I receive (thanks to Verizon Wireless!) as well as how fast my phone charges, so missing or losing a call is rarely an issue unless I hit known dead spots in my area. Since I prefer having a fully charged battery at all times as I usually keep my phone turned on all of the time, I do recharge mine daily when the bars drop from four to three, so rarely do I let mine fully discharge. I am noticing recently that the charge doesn't seem to last as long, but it my be because of my frequent charging habits alone. Otherwise, the charge will last a few days depending on how much you talk. So far I've not taken advantage of the Mobile Web feature, but I'm sure I'll get there eventually. In conclusion, this highly recommended LG VX6100 Cellular Phone is a trendy choice that's very popular especially with my teenage daughter, Kelsey, and her friends. I enjoy having the option of taking a spontaneous photo every now and then with the camera feature, so for the price, we certainly got our money's worth with the special deal we received. Good luck and happy talking, texting, and pixing :-)
