I have been using this product for several months, since it first appeared on the shelves of my local Walmart store. I am completely satisfied by its performance, and I always make sure I have a bottle of the stuff on hand.
How To Use It
The back of the bottle of Dawn Power Dissolver claims the products is "Ideal for use on baked and burnt-on grease." The directions are to "Step 1: Spray the area to be cleaned. Don't add water until you're ready to wipe clean (Step 3.) Step 2: Set aside while you do the rest of your dishes (10-15 min.). For really tough items, let sit longer (max 30 minutes). Really old yellow build-up might require a second treatment and/or minor scrubbing. Step 3: Wipe or wash and rinse item clean. Treated items can also be put directly into the dishwasher without wiping or rinsing."
The bottle recommends the product be used on pots, pans, dishes, stoves, ovens and grills, and instructs the consumer to avoid use on appliance lettering, scratched "non-stick" surfaces, copper, and some other surfaces.
How It Works for My Family
I use Dawn Power Dissolver several times a week, but I use it sparingly, and I have a realistic expectation about how the product will/should work. It seems, from reading other reviews of this product, that some people expect to spray a little bit of this stuff on their baked and caked-on, greasy grimy dishes, wait a few minutes, then easily wipe or rinse the crud away. I think we all wish cleaning really messy dishes could be that easy!
I use Power Dissolver on dishes that I have already rinsed out well, and only really baked-on food residue remains. We do not have a dishwasher in our home (other than me, that is!) so I am well-used to rinsing out dishes before truly beginning to wash them. I typically attempt to wash all dishes in regular dishwater first, and if there is too much dried-on, caked-on food, I will spray a little Power Dissolver on the affected spots, then allow the product to sit in the dish/pan for about 15 minutes. I find that a little of the Power Dissolver generally goes a long way, but if a dish is very dirty, or the cooked food has been allowed to dry in the pan or dish, then another application of Power Dissolver may be necessary. I'd estimate that the 12.8 oz. spray bottle lasts about 2-3 weeks in my home (unless I am doing lots of heavy-duty cooking!)
Some of the other reviewers of this product that did not like its performance seem to have used the product in a way it was not intended. At least one reviewer seems to have expected Dawn Power Dissolver to clean the bottom/underside of a cooking pot, but this product is only intended to clean the inside/cooking surface of pots, pans, dishes, etc. I think the only way you can truly get rid of greasy buildup on the outside of the pots and pans, where they are getting direct exposure to the heat source, is by using steel wool or a good tarnish cleaner made specifically for that purpose.
The product has been promoted as a good product for cleaning the yellow/brown/black buildup that can appear on cookware. This buildup is usually a residue from cooking sprays that gets baked onto the surface of the pan over time. I have used Dawn Power Dissolver to clean this residue off of my stovetop griddle pan, a pizza pan that I had once believed was beyond redemption, and cookie sheets. A little bit of scrubbing was necessary, but the Power Dissolver worked the best of all products I had previously tried, and there had been several!
While other reviewers have complained about the smell of this product, I do not find the odor to be overpowering or irritating. In fact, I am glad Power Dissolver has a strong smell; to me, one of the benefits of this product is that it helps to remove the odors from plastic containers, particularly the disposable types of containers (Glad, Ziploc, etc.) used for storing leftover foods.
Again, I think this product works so well that I make sure I always have some in the house. To me, it is well worth the additional expense (above and beyond purchasing my regular dishwashing detergent) and it performs better than I originally expected.
