Not a good network, phones -horrible and CS - waste of time

the bottom line -
I honestly HATE AT&T Wireless - but you can't get out of the contracts - even if the PROVIDER CAN'T PROVIDE SERVICE!!!
This is by far the worst service I have ever had!
I have been a customer for probably 6 years now and I can honestly say that as a digital customer- my service (customer SVC and wireless) were excellent!!!
As a GSM customer -THIS SERVICE IS HORRIBLE!!!
Now - I have had 12 phones in the last YEAR and ON 2 different networks. AT&T and Cingular keep telling me it was the phones. Or that it was due to the merger.
The phones themselves - Problem 1
1. The current Motorola V220 I have won't hold a charge. I changed the battery, then I had to change the phone. Now I need a new phone again because the phone still won't charge.
2. The Samsung X426 phones we purchased - NO Good. It was so irritating to NEVER GET A STRONG ENOUGH SIGNAL TO HOLD A CONVERSATION.
3. Prior to that we purchased Nokia's. Well, this was certainly entertaining.
1 phone wouldn't take a charge, 1 phone didn't keep a signal when you called someone else on the network. We bought 6 Nokia's. All had problems!!
Why continue service w/ AT&T at that point?? - The contract. They would not allow me to cancel w/o paying $300 first. I can't understand why I have to pay to terminate something that doesn't work anyway!!!
Customer Service -
The kicker was trying to convert my account from digital to GSM and adding on a line. This took 4 months to complete because CS couldn't get it straight. Certain phones we should NOT have been charged for - and were.
They owed me a bunch of credits. They even shipped the phones to the wrong address.
Then the phones that we ordered and didn't work, I was to receive shipping labels to return them. I AM STILL WAITING FOR SOME !!! I've called, emailed and written and NOTHING EVER CAME!! Except the phone calls from a credit collection agency saying I am past due on the amount owed for phones that weren't returned and PS - DIDN'T WORK!!
When they finally got it straight, we wanted to increase our minutes - they told me I had to call on the exact cutoff date. You can't change your plan in mid month. I said I don't care about that. Just change it for the next cycle. STILL HASN'T BEEN CHANGED.
