Choosing a right Martial Art part 2: grappling arts.
by alseltzer | Jul 15 '01
Grappling is for people who like to get up close and personal with their enemies, have strong build and ready to get hurled on the floor a lot.

Your article has been of great help. I was leaning more toward a grappling art, but since you brought up the disadvantage of fighting with more than one person, I think I'm going to pick a striking art. But I would like to read more of your articles about other forms of martial arts.

I'd like to read more too, I've had some trouble finding a good website that goes into so much depth on so many styles. I'm leaning toward choosing one of the striking styles myself. I might look for a Tang Soo Do or Jeet Kune Do school.

Hey! This is a pretty cool article. Now I'm going to have to go and find your first one, since you didn't leave a link to it here. I'm glad you mentioned that one of the problems with a grappling art is that it is really only effective against one person. When all the people were raving about the grappling success in the early UFC matches, I kept trying to convince people that it has a distinct weakness in a street fight due to that limitation.

I personally consider one of grapplings big weaknesses to be that you often have to be willing to receive a blow or two in order to get in close. I have yet to see a grappler not get hit at least once trying to take down a punching martial artist.
