| jrrglobe's Full Review: Apple iPod (20 GB, PC - M8741LL/A) MP3 Player |
It started out as a dream in a little cube box, and turn to a reality last year. No, a necessity. If I forget this nifty piece of equipment at home for even a trip across town, I notice quickly. I am an iPod addict!
The things I knew before I bought my iPod last year were that it could hold all of my music and that I could make mixes to match every situation with ease. I didn't know that it would actually change the way I listen to and buy music.
Sound quality is ok, but I've found that it really depends on the quality of the music file that you are playing. I have all of my music ripped at 160kbs, so I can't really tell the difference in sound between the original CD and the iPod. At first, I had to adjust my component equalizers to balance with the built-in, preset iPod equalizer. Once that is done, you won't need to do it again.
The very best thing about owning an iPod is that you can carry you music with you wherever you go. I used to buy music with one of the biggest considerations being the location and atmosphere of where my music playing components were. Mainly, my car and home. Now, I buy music taking into consideration that there may be some place, some time that I might want to play this song/album.
Furthermore, the iPod may change the way you use your music components. A few months after I got my iPod, I noticed that I didn't use my 200 disc CD player anymore, so I sold it. Now, I have a single DVD player that plays CDs and mp3s. I rarely play an actual CD anymore after its been imported into iTunes and synced with the iPod. Instead of using my old, clunky, non-portable components, I've started buying components for the iPod, like an FM transmitter/charger to play the iPod through any FM stereo. My next purchase is a remote control to control my music wirelessly on my patio.
The revelation after buying an iPod is that it is only a good as the software that runs it. Thankfully, its an Apple product run with Apple software. Apple is constantly making upgrades, adjustments, and adding new features to its music management software, iTunes. This means that, as long as you keep up with the free updates, your iPod will operate like a new one.
The iPod has some features that I don't use but I could see how others may love them. One is that it syncs up with your address book on your Mac. I don't use my address book very much on my Mac, but if one does, I could see how it would be helpful to have all of your contacts with you wherever you go. Kind of like a Palm-"lite". It also has a few simple games that can pass the time while standing in line.
The battery is the iPod's weakest link. Apple touts "upto 12 hours per charge battery", but the reality is about 8 hours when it is brand new. After a year, I'm getting about 6 hours per full charge, and I use it several hours per day. I've read articles that tell you how to get the most out of a full charge, but the techniques seem like they would impede on the your iPod experience. But really, 6 hours per charge is not bad after a year.
