| japultra's Full Review: AT&T Mobile Phone Service in Washington/Baltimore |
I switched to AT&T first of all because they carried the Nokia 8260 phone and because of the amount of minutes that they offered. I've had my phone for a little over a month with them and I have not been disappointed with their service.
I usually get 3-4 signals out of 4 on my phone even when inside or down in a basement. I've experienced very few dropped calls but many calls are choppy, but I think that is due to the phone and not the service. Text messages and the ability to download ring tones to my phone are a great bonus.
Customer service is great. I'm usually on hold for about 3 seconds before I am connected to a rep. This was a great change over my 40 minute waits for a Sprint PCS rep. AT&T offers flexibility in changing your plan and they change it the exact day you call in, not like Sprint where you have to wait until the next month, so if you monitor every call that you make, you can actually switch your plan to best suit the number of minutes you used that month, thus saving you lots of money.
An area where AT&T is lacking is the ability to check the number of minutes you're using each month. Without this feature, it is easy to go over your minutes, or consequently have many minutes left over because you're afraid you might have gone over. That is what I experienced. My usage for last month was low enough for the 29.99 plan, but I was signed up for the 39.99 plan, thus paying an extra ten dollars for nothing. Knowing the number of minutes I had used would have definitely encouraged me to use my phone more.
A great feature that you can access online is the ability to check your past and present bills. They are in great detail and show every incoming and outgoing call you received/made and the number of minutes the call took up. A very big minus is the fact that AT&T counts calls even though no one picks up. If the phone rings for 30 seconds, AT&T still counts that as a one minute call even though no one answers. Busy signals are not counted though.
Something else that I do not like with their service is on their Digital Advantage plans, call made to your home calling area are not always a local call. I am on the east coast, living in the Washington DC area, and even though New Jersey is a party of my home calling area, calls made to there are long distance.
AT&T does offer other plans which do include nationwide long distance, but considerably less included minutes, so they do offer much flexibility.
Overall, I am happy with my service as I mostly stay in my local calling area and hardly use long distance.
