I am graduating from graduate school in three weeks and am looking for a nurse practitioner job. I have searched the internet extensively and not have too much luck finding sites that had nurse practitioner jobs listed in my area. Most of the big commercial job sites have mostly computer type jobs and the medical ones don’t have anything listed in my area.
America’s Job Bank
I came across America’s Job bank by following a link from another site. I searched for nurse practitioner jobs in my area and WOW! THERE WERE JOBS!!! I registered on the site and followed the directions to apply for the positions.
Site navigation
The site is difficult to navigate. You can search for jobs by zip code, occupation or key word. If you know the job number of the job you are looking for, you can search by job number. I tried to search by occupation and was brought to a tree system containing all sorts of different job titles, none of which were nurse practitioner. I had much better luck looking by keyword.
Once you specify your keyword, you can specify a zip code and a mileage radius that you would be willing to travel. You are then shown your results.
I found that saving my search seemed to be easier because I was looking for the same search each time I looked at the site. Once I registered I was brought to New York’s Job bank which had jobs specifically in New York State.
You can also have them email you with new jobs that match your search criteria. I have it sent to mail me every day, even if there are no new jobs. A new job comes in about 1-2 times a week.
Department of Labor
I sent resumes and cover letters for the first positions I saw and a few days later got a letter in the mail from the New York State Department of Labor. I filled out a form to officially register with them and now they send me jobs periodically that they think I would be qualified for. (Some of the jobs they sent me were for a registered nurse, not a nurse practitioner.) If I am interested in the job, I go to the site to read more about it and apply. If I am not interested, I send the letter back and tell them why I am not interested. This is required for them to keep sending them you job orders.
Has it worked?
I haven’t found my dream job yet. Unfortunately, there are a lot of nurse practitioners and not a lot of jobs but I am still looking. I continue to apply for every job that appears on the site that I am qualified for and keep my fingers crossed. I’m glad I found the site because have heard about a lot of jobs that my classmates haven’t found. Let’s hope they don’t find out about them.
