| Freak369's Full Review: Arm and Hammer Carpet and Room Deodorizer |
When we moved we had to get rid of some of our animals; thankfully they all went to great homes and adjusted well. I still miss my beloved guinea pigs but they were too fragile to make the move without having a nervous breakdown. After we settled in we adopted two dogs that I named Bartleby and Loki; both are daschunds from a litter that was dropped off at a local animal rescue shelter. I couldnt bear to split them up so we adopted both of them. They were the runts of the litter and had some medical problems, one of which was, well, poor bladder control. I wasnt about to put diapers on them nor was I going to yell at them for having an accident - its not their fault. The last thing I wanted was to end up with smelly carpets so we tried to keep them in the areas with the hardwood floors so that if they did have an accident wed be able to spot it and clean it up quickly. When they would stray on to the carpeting and have an accident Id clean it up and toss some Arm And Hammer Carpet And Room Deodorizer to try and neutralize any smell that might occur. Little did I know that this stuff was like Daschund Dope - as soon as theyd smell it they would start yapping and sniffing at it - the result were two sneezing doggies. Have you ever seen a wiener dog sneeze? Words just simply cant explain how hysterical it is.
Arm And Hammer Carpet And Room Deodorizer
Mountain Rain Scent
After I saw the way that they reacted to it I called my veterinarian to ask if they might be allergic to it or if I should use something else [even though the package says that it is safe for use around pets]. He told me to use it only when they werent around and if they still kept going for it that I should try to switch to something else. No sooner did I pull the box out of the closet, they both started yapping and hopping around. They never tried to eat it, they just really liked the smell of it. If you have ever used this stuff you know how this stiff can linger in the air and agitate your lungs if you inhale it - imagine a wiener dog sniffing this stuff. After having Loki sneeze on me about five times I decided that I needed to try something different for the carpeting but I still sneak this out when they are outside playing. Thankfully this never agitated their skin - something that I really worried about after I saw them rolling around on the carpeting after I used this.
This does a great job at getting rid of scents and smells that linger in the air and it is extremely easy to use. Just sprinkle this on that area that you want to treat, let it sit for about fifteen minutes and vacuum it up. For really bad odors you can allow this to stand for up to a half hour before you vacuum it up. The downside to this is that if you use it often it will build up in the sweeper bag and when you turn it on, the whole place smells like the deodorizer. This isnt a huge problem unless the bag is more than half full - then you run the risk of having the powder leak out of the bag and fly all over the place. Not only does this create a mess [and a hell of a lot of dusting] but if you inhale it you will be coughing for a while. This goes double if you are using a Shop Vac, for some reason it seems to spit out the powder and get it all over the place.
You can find this at most retail and grocery stores but Wal-Mart and Target usually have the best prices. These usually cost about a dollar fifty but you can get them on sale from time to time for less. The cardboard containers have 21 ounces of product in it and have a plastic flip top to them so it is easier to sprinkle out the powder. I guess you could get away with using regular baking soda if you dont want the scent to it but I have no idea how much you would use for a certain area. Arm & Hammer suggests that you sprinkle this on the carpet [never on wet or damp carpeting] then vacuum it up. It can also be used on upholstered furniture, your carpets in your vehicle and in garbage cans. I picked up the Mountain Rain scent because it isnt strong or overpowering but manages to keeps smells away.
The Bottom Line
If you have a smoker in the house or just animals that like to leave you little presents from time to time, this is a nice thing to have around to get rid of obnoxious scents and smells. I really like the way that it is packaged and that it contains baking soda to really do a number on odors that are deep in carpeting. I dont use this every time I vacuum but I do use it at least once a week when I clean all the rooms. For the tree huggers - youll be happy to know that the container is made from 100% recycled cardboard. This doesnt take up much space under the sink but since it is cardboard you will want to make sure that it doesnt get wet and that it isnt exposed to water.
