| knoydart's Full Review: LG VX6100 Cellular Phone |
What's the best cell phone is like asking how long a piece of string is. You can't answer, because it all depends on what you're used to, what you're going to use it for & how your use will change with time.
The themes for this review are pretty much the same as the others you'll read; some awful side buttons that always seem to get pressed at the wrong time, quirky camera controls, poor speakerphone & so on.
However it is cheap & certainly it has all the options I would use. I come from the UK where great cell phones are given away for FREE with your 1 year contract (airtime rates are lower too, hmmm) so I was keen to make sure I paid as little as possible for my phone now I live in the US.
OK so the camera is very low rez & the flash is as weedy as a lit match, but it all works & I have found it useful to make records of images I would have otherwise missed. It also comes with a really useful lense cover, which stops all manner of dirt & moisture making their way into your pictures.
I've found reception, sound & reliability pretty good. Battery life is also fine, but not the best as the large color screen eats up battery life all the time, even when you use it on the lowest brightness setting. It has no external color screen, but to be honest that doesn't bother me.
Software wise there's some useful tricks, like a tip calculator, but it is pretty basic. If you want to add anything you can use the "Get it now" feature, but you pay & pay & pay for everything. I can understand a charge for really cool & feature laden stuff like Interactive World Maps or whatever, but for a simple game of Tetris that is included free with every Nokia I've seen? No way! They're not cheap either, with purhcase fees & monthly subscriptions. Not surprsingly I've never bought a "Get it now" feature & problably never will.
For me I think this phone is great for the price. Sure I could have got a Moto Razor, but honestly it was so thin I had trouble handling it. The LG is prety chunky, especially when in a leather case, but if you have big hands this may be an asset to you. For a saving of $130 over the Moto Razor I'll take chunky or now.
You can get better, but to be honest this is like the people who drive huge SUVs with all sorts of off road tricks such as diff lock, traction control & low ratios..... great, except that they spend all their life taking the kids to school, parked at the office car park, stuck in traffic jams... you get the idea. The LG will undoubtedly be restrictive & annoying to some, but to the majority who just want a simple phone & don't want to pay for lots of stuff their never going to use then your needs will be met, which is why I'll be keeping mine for the forseable future.
