Helmets...multi purpose marvels.

Aug 22 '01

The Bottom Line Helmets do more than just provide a good margin of protection. Read on and find how a helmet can help you and others in everyday life.

There is considerable debate these days about to wear or not to wear a helmet in the motorcycling world. I'm not going to really get into that heated debate. There are plenty of groups that are doing that quite well, thank you.
Take a look for yourself. http://www.bikersrights.com/helmets.html They have their stand for the motorcyclist as well,as many others such as the AMA (not the doctors). http://www.ama-cycle.org/ Also read "BE COOL,WHERE A HELMET!" by ANGELSnTOW,on this same website. There's food for thought. -RR-

I wear a helmet. I always have, ever since I was a kid that lost my '74 Yamaha MX 125 in a powerslide that sent me into a thicket of trees. I remember to this day,the sensation and sounds of my helmeted noggin bouncing off of those trees, like a ping pong ball in a clothes dryer. Along with a few other scrapes and an incident that resulted in me rear-ending a friend of mine's '71 Ford LTD. (The Streets Of SanFrancisco - A Quinn Martin Production.) That incident resulted in a 1 1/2 endo onto his roof after someone decided to come across a one way bridge at about the same time that me and my friend were halfway across. I walked away from those episodes, shaken, but not injured. Paying attention has it's benefits as well.

Even though I'm pro helmet,I'm not here to step on a soapbox to preach the word about helmets in crash situations. I thought it might be fun to look at the other positive aspects of wearing a helmet. In my home state of South Carolina, there is no helmet laws enforced for riders over the age 21.

First of all, well, secondly after safety reasons, helmets are cool. The different styles, colors and graphic schemes are endless. I mean we were given one head and there's not a lot you can do with that unless you're into a lot of cosmetic surgery and tattoos. Helmets are cheaper than all that and you have a lot potential for expressing yourself. You can forget about any sort of a hairstyle. In the end,you will have that wind blown look without wearing one. You can have more than one helmet, like underwear with the day of the week sewn on them.* Stickers? Please, stick'em on,let everyone know that you think helmet laws suck with a sticker on your helmet. To honk if they love Jesus or How's my driving?,Call 1-800-+++-++++. You get the idea. In my opinion, I think it's far better than sticking one on your forehead. Are you the do-it-yourself custom spray paint type of guy? Have at it young man. Flames are always cool. However, I would think it would be hard to free hand flames with Wal-mart's best. You might need to seek the help of professionals.
You can take that comment any way you like. hehe

Moving along to the hair impaired**,there are more things to consider than just hopping on your trusty steed and heading down the highway or dusty trail. You have the sun to worry about. Nothing like a peeling layer of sunburned skin to wake up to in the following days after a weekend jaunt. So remember the sunblock.
(I wear a full face motocross style helmet,*** with an adjustable visor, which comes in real handy riding into the late afternoon sun.)
Then there is the matter of hair weaves. Don't forget to get that tightened up a bit or you will be flapping in the wind like a loose tarp on a pickup truck.

On to the matter of bugs, wear a full face helmet. I personally don't care for bug matter on my nose, forehead and definitely, not in my eyes. Eye protection is of paramount importance. Ever felt rain on your face at 60 mph? That's a good enough reason for me to wear a full face and goggles.(ouch ouch ouch!)

Helmets have other great benefits aside from head protection. They are great to carry those few items that you need to pick up in the grocery store. It also lets you know how much you can carry on your bike. If you have more than the helmet can hold, you probably have more that you can safely bungee. Need a place to sit or prop your foot for a few minutes? Use your helmet. Oh no! My bike is on fire!..Use your skull bucket as a water bucket.

The average motorcyclist likes to let everyone know that he or she rides. Anyone can wear a tee shirt. Don't lock the helmet to your bike. Proudly walk into where ever you are going, with helmet in hand, and let them know you ride. It's always a good idea to carry a spare helmet. Love can happen anytime, anywhere.

Did you know that helmets float? Yep,they sure do. So if you ever see a drowning person, and can't find anything else, carefully toss them your helmet. You're sure to make headlines.****

Well there you go. There's a few benefits to wearing a helmet. I'm sure there are thousands more. Tell me your ideas. Reply to the comment section of this epinion.

So,ride safely and be seen(in your helmet).

Have Fun...

** Thankfully the author has a full head of hair and in conjunction with helmet padding, might provide more cushion in the event of an accident.

*** No Harley's or sport bikes for this guy. I ride a Honda XR650L dual sport. There's nothing like a foot of suspension on both ends and thirteen inches of ground clearance!

**** Motorcycle helmets are not recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard as an approved flotation device. However, the author thinks it would be better than tossing a brick.
