| jdhpolson's Full Review: Nokia 3310 GSM Cellular Phone |
Nokia is the leading mobile phone producer in the industry, and for a reason. They make great phones for both business and personal users alike.
From 3210 to 3310
The Nokia 3310 is a small phone, and inherits many of the features that made the 3210 such a popular option for mobile phone users. The ability to change covers, ring composition (make your own tones for extra fun, can also be beamed to each other 3310's - you can even assign different ring tones to each caller - handy for knowing who it is without looking at the phone), built-in games (such as the ever-popular Snake), and the predictive text feature (which, during messaging, allows you to type quicker messages by using a built-in dictionary to guess what you write, speeding up word delivery), and vibrating call.
The 3310 takes from the 3210 in a number of areas, however:
Size/Weight - the 3310 is roughly 1/5 smaller than a 3210, and a lot lighter too - the kind of phone that you will forget you are carrying - or not for that matter - easy to lose! =)
New Games - Snake II is the most famous upgrade, although games such as Pairs have also found their way into the newer model
Screensavers - Perhaps a little silly, but if it makes you feel better
Voice Input - This telephone can remember the voice commands for around 10 telephone numbers, allowing you to say the name of the person you are calling and enjoy not having to enter their numbers
Chat - At the same cost as normal SMS, you can chat with another user, just like in an IRC channel. It justs just as much, however, so use it sparingly if you can't afford it
Extended Battery Time - Speaks for itself.
Better Sound Quality - The 3310 has clear, receptive sound, and uses an upgraded sound chip from Nokia, providing almost the same quality as available on home phone lines
Problems with the 3310
This isn't to say that there aren't problems with the 3310, because there are. To name a few:
"Haywire" Incidents - Sometimes, the phone chucks a tantrum, and decides to switch itself off. Annoying. Especially if you are expecting an important call
Cigarette Lighter Charger Doesn't Work - At least not properly, mine kept on slipping out. May need work. Preferrably with duct tape
Predictive SMS can sometimes get it wrong - requiring you to switch out predictive mode and correct things - which takes a long time, and can sometimes extend rather than compress the time needed to enter in a message
Games waste time - Not really a problem =) The games are fairly addictive though, so don't take this phone to any lectures or the like if you want to take good (or any) notes
Who would the 3310 be good for
Students, definantly students, and also young people interested in maintaining a low priced phone to stay in touch. Business people may wish to look elsewhere to more powerful offerings from Nokia such as the 8850 or the Motorola StarTac.
3310 - A Good Purchase?
Yes. The 3310 is a good phone, and, considering the price, is well worth the effort, especially if you can get it on a plan. Just make sure that you keep the warranty card - if this phone dies, it won't be cheap to repair - the technology is pretty intricate, and the phone will break easily, so don't drop it.
