No matter what it is, try it before you turn your nose up at it. Who knows, you might find a new favorite.

I laughed and cried at the same time while reading your review. Our mothers must have attended the same school of culinary art! The only difference my Irish heritage made was that a few times a year, we substituted cabbage for the other veggies and Dad washed it down with more beer..

Parboil the calamari, huh? I think I'd rather parboil and try to eat an old inner tube. I appreciate your suggestion--I really do. You're obviously well versed in culinary areas. However, since there is so much food out there and since my faves are Chinese food and steak, I think I'll stay with them. Thanks, anyway.

Dear masonmaven: You might want to find a place that parboil small calamari before they deep fry them. It makes all the difference.

I liked your humor.

All the best.

I'm curently stuck in the "heartland" of Nebraska where fish is a myth other than bait fish and fresh water kinds.

I lived in the UK for 5 years and yes the rumor is true about the "cooking style" there. Boil it till it becomes a paste is a general rule with the veggies.

Great writing and thanks for the great memories of seafood past.

Will.

I know how you feel. We had some really yucky combinations while growing up. Actually I never cooked at home. When I got married I studied a bunch of cookbooks. This is part of the secret of cooking. Now as far as those mussels. I could die for some right now in a spinach blush sauce. Maybe a vodka sauce too. Try them in sauce. You may change your mind. The only place to get mussels here is in a restaurant. I can not wait to go back to Florida where the fish live and die.
