| icom158's Full Review: Motorola V180 |
History
The first Motorola V180 I received had a messed up LCD with a red line across the screen. It had a not just one stuck pixel, but a whole column. The second Motorola V180 worked well for about a year until the LCD started acting up. On occasion, the back light would not light up when I flipped the whole open. When it did light up, the screen looked shifted and as I tried to press buttons to move around the menu, the screen would become garbled.
Another issue I had with the phone was that it dropped my call after 12 or so minutes. It might be a problem with my carrier, but somehow it works fine if I turn my cellphone off and one again. This phone has more quirks that I would like. This is an issue of quality control. I at least expect to get something that works even though I expect it to be free with my phone plan.
Description
The phone itself is rather attractive physically, black with silver accents. The Motorola V180 was designed to be a phone, not one of those devices with a million gadgets. It was made for people who want just a phone. My impetus for buying this phone is that at some workplaces, they do not allow camera phones, because they represent a hole in security.
Phone Features
One feature that I use a lot is the speakerphone. The speakerphone works great, but you have to be aware of where the microphone is. I like to place it the flop on its side, flipped open. The audio quality is clear and audible. I also like to use this phone as an alarm, so I benefit from having multiple alarms, which I can have for different days. Be careful not too snooze too much, as the phone uses a lot of energy driving the speakerphone speaker for the alarm. The speakerphone speaker is located in the back of the phone. I have found the battery life to last about a week without charging. I make daily calls, so Im sure the battery life will be long enough for most people. The front has a display for the time, which I also find very useful, since I do not carry around a watch. The Motorola V180 has everything to make it an excellent phone when it works.
Extras
The V180 can play mp3 and MIDI ringtones, but you need the proper software to upload them onto your phone. The phone is also internet enabled, so you can download ringtones, games, etc. I do not have internet service, so I can not comment on those. The demo game of Bejeweled helps me kill time waiting for the bus.
I cant recommend this phone even though I like all the technical aspects of it, because of my repeated LCD failures.
