| artiste's Full Review: Wacom Graphire Pen & Mouse Set |
The mouse can be an awkward tool. Most computers know it has limitations and can be dysfunctional at times. Some things like retouching a photo image can be especially unwieldy using a mouse. The answer to this problem is the Wacom Graphire, a wireless tool that comes with a wheel mouse and a pen tool. It's an improved mouse. It also comes in five pretty colors.
I think it is more accurate compared to the standard mouse. The reason why is that the Graphire has a resolution of 1,015 lines per inch which is three times more precise than the standard mouse. I like the fact that it is cordless and it does not have a rolling ball. Did you ever get stuck for a few minutes trying to untangle the wires on your desktop?I have and it is annoying. This is good because it eliminates the tangling- There are no wires. Mac users will especially like this because it has a scroll wheel and a second button. Windows users often take these for granted.
Now for the negatives. You have to get used to the two button Graphite pen. It has a pressure sensitive point. It means that you have to press harder or apply more pressure to get thicker lines for programs like Adobe Photoshop and MetaCreations Painter Classic. If you want to erase your lines, just flip the pen over. The pad that comes with the set has an area of 4 by 5 inches. It has a transparent overlay which is for tracing. Tracing is easy.
The software that comes with the set is PenOffice SE software. It allows for marking up and signing Microsoft Word 97 and 2000 documents. It also allows for creating bitmap sketches without opening a more complicated paint program. It is also great for signing documents and scribbling small notes or sketches without having to use a scanner. It offers some conveniences.
You can program all the buttons, and this is another plus. Therefore the pen can be used for web surfing and other applications. So you don't have to be an artist, but you can use Graphire to replace the mouse and it does more than draw. This is fun, precise and an interesting twist on a familiar product.
