Alltel Can't Even Add

Pros: Decent coverage, pretty low rates
Cons: Mostly inadequate phone and in-store support staff, billing problems, few locations.
The Bottom Line: Probably pass on Alltel. Alltel is cheap and has decent coverage, but has monthly billing hassle. Other providers are more competent, but have less coverage and are more expensive.

For the first year of my service with Alltel, I had disputes EVERY month on my bill. Roaming charges when I never came within 100 miles of my home area's borders, overages when I didn't talk that much. Here's one of about 50 stories I have so far:
I was charged about $100 in overages that I knew were bogus. So I did the usual and called Alltel. They were useless on the phone, so I made my monthly 1-hour-each-way drive to the nearest Alltel store. I told them I didn't talk as much as the total said I did. They didn't believe me. They told me to sit down and add up the itemized billing, and then meet them back at the counter.
I called their bluff.
I sat for an hour and a half and added up every line on the bill and came up about 500 minutes less than the printed total on the bill.
They still didn't believe me.
The in-store rep spent his next hour and a half adding it up himself. Sure enough, he came up with the same figure as me! 500 minutes short of my billed amount! Finally after spending all day in the store, I was refunded my overages.
Now, I'm not a genius, but even I can write a program to add up 300 rows of numbers. Heck, an Excel spreadsheet can even do it! It looks like whoever programmed the Alltel billing system was just as smart as the rest of their support staff.
When you sign up with Alltel, you have to assume you're going to be overcharged just about every month.
