| duskrider's Full Review: Rockford Fosgate Punch 800a2 Car Audio Amplifier |
Rockford Fosgate. Around where I live that name stands alone in car audio supremacy. While I'm not a large fan of Fosgate as everyone else in my town is, this amplifier is well worth an opinion.
It's good.
It's real good.
I used this amp to replace my Power Acoustic APC1400 when I finally decided to upgrade my setup. The 800a2's job was to power a single 15" Eclipse.
The day I received the Fosgate was the day it was installed. I did the installation myself, and I couldn't wait to hear what it sounded like. Installation was not complicated, at least no more than any other car audio amplifier would be, except for a little control knob that mounted inside the car. It was wired using what looked like phone cord. Complaining to myself about needing to run yet ANOTHER wire in my car, I proceeded to mount the control knob under my dash. Once done, I wired up the rest and turned on the system.
I learned my lesson about turning a new system on with the volume way up a long time ago, so all that was left now was to see what it sounded like. I began to turn the volume up.
Almost at once I was amazed at the deepness of the bass I was getting. It was a bit lower than the Power Acoustik played, and it sounded good. As the volume got higher the bass did too. I got the stereo up to where I normally listen and was quite impressed... but not blown away.
But alas... I had forgotten about the little knob. Oh, what does THAT do? So I turned the knob up.
The song has almost ended by the time I found most of my fillings and put the eyes back into my head.
Maybe that's a little exaggeration, but the difference with just a quarter turn of that knob is a real kick. Turning up the knob all the way would hurt my ears. In fact, I never played my music with the knob turned up. I would only use it to impress people... and then I'd turn it down so I could actually listen to it.
After playing my music for a while at a considerable level, I decided to go back and check to see how hot the amp was getting. It was warm, but not hot. I don't think I ever made that amp break a sweat. The birth sheet that came with it said it tested with 956 watts. I don't doubt it.
The bottom line is that if you're looking for lots of clean power, the Power 800a2 can give it to you. I got lucky and found it online for about $550.00. If it hadn't been stolen out of my trunk I would still have it today, and I certainly wouldn't be looking at trading it in.
