| matrusty's Full Review: Crash Team Racing for PlayStation 1 |
Crash team racing on the playstation is quite good considering its so much alike the Nintendo 64’s version Mario Karts. The only difference is the characters and level names. The weapons that you use are also very similar. For instance in Mario you get lock on shells that when fired follow the target until it hits it. These come in threes or ones. In CTR you get missiles that do exactly the same thing and also come in threes or ones. To collect weapons you have to drive into “?” crates on the course you are racing on. Power ups are the same but you have to drive in to a lined crate. By getting these power ups in the form of apples, your weapons become more powerful and your kart gets faster.
Some of the Weapons and what they do:
Tracking missiles: These are very accurate missiles which lock onto the closest driver in front of you when fired. When one of these is after you a cross hair appears on the back of your cart.
When you get enough power ups these missiles will go faster and track better.
Bowling bombs: These are big bombs that keep rolling until they hit something. You can also detonate them at any point while their rolling by pushing the circle button again. The powered up version has a wider blast area.
Power shields: The green shield protects you from the opponent's weapons and makes the explode when you drive into them. You can also fire these after activation so they have the same effect as a bowling bomb but they move faster. The powered up version lasts indefinitely and is stronger.
TNT crates: You can drop this crate behind your cart to make following drivers blow up. The powered up version is quicker.
Acid bottles: These are also things you can drop on your enemy or fire in front of you. It spins them out and makes them stop. The powered up version does the same but a rain cloud appears over their head making them slow down.
Uga Uga’s: These are masks that circle you and make you invincible for a few seconds. It also makes your cart faster for the duration. The powered up one lasts longer.
Clocks: These make all the other racers slow down for a few seconds allowing you to get through. The powered up one lasts longer.
Warp missiles: These are missiles which targets the first player and does not stop until it hits the first player. The power up hits all the players in front of you.
The different characters are: Crash Bandicoot, Dr. Neo Cortex, Tiny, Coco Bandicoot (Crashs sister), Dr.N.Gin, Dingodile, Polar, Pura, and Nitros Oxide.
Crash Bandicoot lives on an island that is about to be invaded by all of these characters because Nitros Oxide (an evil alien) is trying to take over the world. He decides to race the fastest racer from Earth. If Nitros wins he will turn the earth into a big concrete car park. All these races for the title of Earth’s fastest, take place on Crashes island. All the characters from the previous three Crash Bandicoot games decide to try to beat Nitro. The thing is that they all have to battle it out to see who will be Earth’s finest. Even the bad guys join in.
The game also includes a battle mode, a Vs mode and championship mode.
Battle mode: This is like a big showdown where up to 4 players (with the multitap) can fight it out in different arenas. All the weapons are included and two more as well.
VS mode: Up to four players can race to accumulate points in a cup across 4 tracks for points. Nine points for first, six points for second place, three points for third, one point for last.
Championship: This is similar to VS but you compete against 7 other computer players.
It’s a great game and worth 9/10.
