| britguy's Full Review: Panasonic KX-FP105 Printer |
On June,2nd, I will have owned this machine for exactly one year, and although it is not 'The Ultimate Office Machine', it does do several things pretty well. The two foremost reasons for owning this machine would be the Fax, and the Copying capabilities.
We use this machine in our home, and we have found it very easy to both send and receive faxes of very decent quality, and we are also able to generate photocopies of needed documents, such as letters, contracts, receipts, and lessons for our children to work on at home. Faxes and copies will only be printed in shades of black and white, so some lighter colors will either be a faint grey, or not appear at all.
Copies or faxes have to be placed face-down in order for the machine to process them. This is something that I frequently forget!
You are provided with an initial 'starter' film cartridge, which is about 20% of the size of the regular cartridge that you will need. Regular replacement cartridges (model#KX-FA65) cost around $31 at Staples. This cartridge has the capacity to make approximately five times more printouts (about 330 pages) than the starter cartridge is capable of.
Initial setup is well diagrammed in the clearly written manual (112 pages), and takes only about 10 - 20 minutes of careful instruction-following to get up and running. There a 6 'Quick Start' pages of instruction at the front of the manual, which are very easy to follow.
The manual has separate sections for: Initial Preparation, Telephone, Fax/Copy, Help, general Information, and a Spanish 'Quick Start' section.
INITIAL PREPARATION
This section tells you about various available accessories, setup, the layout of the controls, settings, and how to make various adjustments.
TELEPHONE
Here we learn how the various phone functions work, and how to use them. Some of the included functions are: One-Touch Dial, Jog Dial, Caller ID, and Voice Contact (where you are able to talk to the caller after a fax has been sent or received - instead of having to hang up and dial again).
FAX/COPY
In this section, we get instructed on all phases of Fax/Copy operations that this machine is capable of: Send/Receive Faxes (manual or automatic settings), and the various copying options: Single/multiple copies, collated copies, enlargement/reduction.
HELP
Various messages will appear on the display panel in response to various error conditions or malfunctions. These messages are detailed, along with some remedial steps in this section, along with several more pages devoted to troubleshooting - which I can honestly say, I have never needed to refer to, over the course of a year. Here we can get helpful information about cleaning and maintaining the machine, as well as access to various printjobs that can be called from the machine, how to change the display's contrast, and resetting the advanced features to their defaults.
The unit weighs about 9lbs, and only takes up 1sq.ft. of desk or counter space, although you will need to leave at least 9 inches of space in front of the unit, since pages come out of the machine in the front, and without this space, or the optional paper stacker, you'll be playing the Paper Pick-Up game, quite often!
This is a capable machine, with a variety of useful functions, and although it isn't the world's fastest or most outstanding performer, it is both functional and reliable.
