| dgreenbaum's Full Review: Lawrence Journal-World |
I've been a subscriber of the Lawrence Journal World for a few years now and will stay a subscriber simply because it reports the local news and I also like the Sunday coupons and Wednesday food ads. It's the only paper that advertises the local Lawrence stores.
However, the reporting can be very biased at time and the Editorials are significantly out of step with the community. Most important, the World Company owns about 6 papers in this area, a cable company, web services, on site computer repair and networking, TV production, printing, direct marketing, real estate, etc. At some point it seems like the World Company competes with just about everyone in town and makes it difficult for starting businesses.
While the paper reports the news, it too often creates news to serve it's other division's interests, such as a "front page" story in the business section on new cable modems or taking out full page ads for their Internet services. It gets a bit overwhelming at time having a monopolistic marketing message pressing you on the average of every 3 pages.
If you want local daily news, try going online first at www.ljworld.com. If you buy the paper, remember the news you are getting tends to be biased to the World Company's vast business interests.
