Recently, I needed a place to stay in Charlottetown, PEI for three weeks. I didn't want to move anything more than necessary from my current place of residence in New Brunswick, so I needed a place that would be furnished, complete with dishes, etc. I had previously stayed at a hotel for about 5 weeks in Charlottetown when I was between apartments in the winter about a year and a half ago for a decent price. When I called them, I was informed that as it was tourist season, renting a place for three weeks would cost $1500! (To put this in perspective, I had been paying $500/month rent before I moved in April, and the unit I had rented from this same place before was $720 for a month, and was larger than the unit I received the quote for). So I called more places and was told that they didn't rent on a weekly or monthly basis, only nightly (at $100+/night!) during the on season. Finally, I called the Sunny King Motel, a 2.5 star facility in Cornwall, PEI, about 10-15 minutes from Charlottetown. I was quoted a price of $875. I took the place without ever seeing the unit, because at this point I was desperate for a place to stay.
The only problem was that I would need to have my own phone line installed in order to have access to the internet because of the way their phone system worked. The person I talked to on the phone was very friendly and accommodating. He even informed me that I should not be charged the installation fee as the line was already installed by previous tenants. He said that if I was charged and the phone company would not reverse the charges, that he would call them and talk to them and have them do it, as he had done that before. That impressed me, since technically if a tenant hooks up a separate phone line, that is between the tenant and the phone company, and has nothing to do with the motel.
Upon arrival, I checked in with the same person I talked to on the phone (all of my dealings were with this same person, and I assume he was the owner). The phone company had shipped the installation package for the internet to the motel, and he had it on hand. He asked me when I was having the phone line connected. When I told him that it was supposed to be hooked up upon my arrival, he said it was strange, as the technician had not been in to see him, and they usually do when hooking up new lines. He then let me know that the line had to be connected to the right jack as there were separate ones for the motel phone line and for private lines. When I went to the room, surprise, my phone line wasn't working. I mentioned it to him, and he went into the room and looked at it, and explained what the problem was (phone company's fault). He was under no obligation to do this for me, but he seemed glad to help out. The information he gave me also helped with my dealings with the phone company (who eventually got it right).
The unit itself (basically a one bedroom apartment) was slightly dated, but spotlessly clean. The kitchen included a fridge and stove (gas), microwave, toaster, coffee maker, and basic dishes. There was a computer desk, tv (with basic cable), and a couch that pulled out into a bed. The bedroom had one double bed, a dresser, and a night stand.
Services included housekeeping every Wednesday (even though I had originally been told that it would not be included in the price), which included replacement of towels, facecloths, dishtowels, and bedsheets, and some general cleaning. Coin operated laundry was available on site, which was very convenient. There was also a pool, which I did not use given the time of year.
One thing I realized a few days into my stay was that the walls are quite thin in this building. I was awakened at 2:30am one night with the neighbour's tv blaring, and them laughing loudly at whatever was on tv. However, this was the only incident where the thin walls were a problem, and the problem had more to do with rude people than the walls. There was some minor sound transfer through the walls with other people, but it was never distracting.
My other two (minor) complaints would be that the mattress was old and not as comfortable as it should be, and the tv didn't always work (it would go snowy at times), but this was not really an issue as I don't watch much tv. To be fair, I brought neither of these complaints to the owner (though I maybe should have mentioned them before I left, at least so he would be aware of them).
Overall I enjoyed my stay at the Sunny King Motel. The facilities were quite adequate for my needs, and all of my dealings with the owner were very pleasant.
