Keith Caputo -- Live at CBGB's 313 Gallery 3/12/02

Apr 05 '02

The Bottom Line See Keith Live. 'Nuff said.

Wow. It has definitely been a long time since I even attempted to write a review for this site...so please excuse me if my writing's a bit sloppy. I apologize to everyone for being absent for so long...but simply put, I lost my inspiration. Today, for some reason I felt inspired...so here I am.

Put it this way. I've been through a lot of stuff over the last two years or so. I have come to beleive that life works in a lot of different circles. Sometimes these circles are good, sometimes they are not. But to me, life always seems to work that way.

The other day, my best friend in the whole world, Sean, wrote me a note that really surprised me. In it, he told me that my all time favorite musical performer, Keith Caputo, former lead singer of Life of Agony, was playing at the CBGB 313 Gallery on Tuesday night. The second I saw that email, I knew I had to be there, regardless of what I already had doing, or regardless of the price. You see, two years ago, before my life started in a negative circle, he and I had seen Keith play at this same place, and had stood in awe for an hour. Coincidentally, this was also one of the final reviews I had ever written for Epinions.com.

Like i said, its all about circles.

So, needless to say, my little jedi bootie, took himself down to the gallery and picked up a few tickets, and tonight, I attended what probably was the best concert I ever have witnessed.

I realise few of you know me anymore. But one thing you definitely should know about me is that music moves me. Sometimes it moves me incredibly. Keith Caputo has this incredible way of moving me, and I knew this night would be no different. I promised myself I wouldn't shed a tear. But, inside myself I knew that this would be a hard promise to keep.

For those of you who don't know Keith Caputo, or his history, please allow me to defer for a quick second. Throughout the early 1990's, Keith was the lead singer for an up and coming hardcore outfit known as Life of Agony, or L.O.A., as their true fans knew them. Keith always had a beautiful voice, even though he sang for an abrupt hardcore outfit. And his true fans knew he had to grow to become something a whole lot more. So in the mid 1990's he left the band to persue a career as a solo artist, all his own.

OK, fast forward back to the present.

I gathered my friends Sean and Soto, and we made our way down to the 313 Gallery, which for those of you not from NY, is connected directly to the legendary CBGB's and is a beautiful art gallery where musicians perform as well.

We took seats right in front of the stage, and waited eagerly and anticipated Keith's taking of the stage like kids in a candy store. Promptly at 9PM, that sjust what Keith did. From that point on, true musical majesty was in full effect.

He, and his his guitarist took the stage, and began the set with a song called "The Girl I Love". This depressing tale of a woman who no longer loved him echoed throughout the walls of the gallery with an angelic ambiance, and really hit home with me, causing my eyes to well up. I told you, musical beauty gets to me. Keith's deep voice just boomed off the walls, and held every fan totally engrossed.

The next song Keith did, was utterly incredibly. It was the last song on his solo Roadrunner Records debut, a song called "Brandy Duval". This song, which is written about his mom, literally was song with so much emotion and fervor, that you could literally hear a pin drop in the gallery, aside from Keith's incredible voice.

From that point on Keith continued to wow the crowd with lots of outher songs from his solo debut.

The point of the night that truely came full circle for me though, was when Keith picked up his own guitar and decided to belt out the classic Life of Agony song "Let's Pretend". I hadn't heard this song live in years, and never this way. As Keith stated the word's "Mommy, it's me, it's Keith, you had me back when", I lost it, and just let my eyes well up. The beauty in his voice had finally gotten hold of me...and as I peeked over my shoulder at my two friends, the same reaction was with them. Three men crying like babies. Wow, never have seen anything like that...probably never will again. The song just played off the walls of the gallery, and Keith's voice just puntuated every note with sheer beauty.

But that wasn't the only Life of Agony song to be done this night. Keith also dusted off the song "Weeds" from the Life of Agony record "Soul Searching Sun". It too, was done magnificently. Each word, eagerly anticipate dby the crowd, each note eaten up and taken in. Frankly, I can;t remember finding myself in such utter awe and so moved.

Keith finished his almost hour and a hal flong set with the song "Home", which ialso is an incredibly moving tale of pain and redemption. And as I stood up and applauded, with the rest of the crowd at the utter amazement of what we had witnessed, Keith agreed to do one more song.

"New York City" was his encore, a song about his home town. And after all we residents of New York City had been through, thi ssong was as welcome as mom's apple pie. We all sang the words as if it were OUR song, and this time Keith had a tear in his eye. When this song was over, the show was finally over...only nobody wanted it to be. True musical awe had been achieved. true musical brilliance, true musical beauty...all present and apparent for us to see. Wow is the word.

The last time I had seen Keith live, I was in a totally different frame of mind, and a totally different state of life, and it was just as beautiful. This time, it was completely awe inspiring and completely wonderful.

It's all about circles as I said above, and this time, Keith's performances and true musical majesty had come full circle.

And get this, the good news is that Keith is doing two more of these shows. Next Tuesday and the Tuesday after that, all through the month of March at the same CBGB 313 Gallery. You can bet your bottom dollar that this Jedi will be there. If you love music, so will you.

This is not a performer to miss. Definitely get your booties down there to check it out. And if you should see this cute little Jedi weeping while there, pelase pass me a tissue.

As always...thank you so much for reading, and I will certainly try not to be absent for so long a stretch from this website.
