Pros: It'll probably be really awesome by the end of the year.
Cons: It might be the biggest waste of $300 by the end of the year.
The Bottom Line: Chances are, if you like PlayStation, you'll love PlayStation2. However, you are warned that bigger and better things are on their way.

$300 is a God-awful large amount of money. So much in fact, that for now at least, my brother and I have the option of purchasing one (sniffle) next-generation system. Unfortunately, temptation got the best of us, and now there is a Sony Playstation2 sitting next to our television. We got it before we had the chance to find out the potential of the GameCube and the X-Box. I probably won't regret buying it, as I enjoy the selection of games that will be released for PS2, and the machine is certainly very exceptional when stacked up against the statistics of the other new systems. However, I shall, for at least the time being, wonder what could've been if I had waited.
Basically, the PlayStation2 is a great system. It's incredibly powerful, the graphics are great, and loading time is minimal. The first game that we got is The Bouncer. It was really awesome. The game is chop full of FMVs, and the gameplay looks about as good as an FMV. So, PlayStation2 is really quite nice.
My only real concern is with memory cards. They're really expensive- $35 for an official PS2 card. I know that the X-Box will have a hard drive, thus eliminating the dire need to own memory cards. Memory cards are a necessity for PS2 gamers, as virtually every game requires that you save data to fully use the game. I filled up 3 memory cards for the old Playstation. Does that mean I have to shell out 100 extra dollars just to save my games? My advice for memory cards is to get the Mad Catz one- it's $5 cheaper, and it's actually endorsed by Sony.
Although the PS2 is probably going to be technologically inferior to future systems (I've read that it has a lot less RAM than the X-Box. And it's add-ons most likely won't compare to the GameCube's---[you can hook a Game Boy Advance to a GameCube and use it as a controller]), what matters are the games that are available on the system, and the PS2 certainly has a number of great games due out in the future, as well as available now. I am personally a huge fan of SquareSoft (I bought a PSX just for FFVII), so I know I will be enjoying my PS2 very much when Final Fantasy X and the Xenogears sequel are released. I am also pretty excited about Gran Turismo 3.
In conclusion, PS2 probably won't be as awesome a piece of hardware as the GameCube or the X-Box. But if you enjoyed the games on the original PlayStation, you'll have a hell of a time with a PS2.
