| kannanmr's Full Review: 3dfx Voodoo3 2000 PCI |
I finally decided to get a decent card for my old computer
(A Pentium 200, 64MB EDO, 20GB HDD, CLGD5440 Video card,
14" Hansol monitor), so that my brother can play games at
it. I saw this Voodoo3 2000 PCI in a local computer store
and decided to go for it as I had heard a lot about its
performance.
The price was ok for me, and so, I grabbed it and replaced
my old Cirrus card. It had some manuals and a driver CD, but who needs all these? To say about the installation,
there was nothing. I threw away the Cirrus card and plugged
in this Voodoo3 2000 PCI and booted up the system. My WinME
detected the card as a normal PCI VGA card. I installed the
WHQL drivers 1.07 and rebooted the system again.
voila...the display was sharp, and everything worked
smoothly. I tried Q3Demo first, and the visual quality
impressed me. I also tried playing Diabolo 2, GLQuake,
Hexen 2 and Flight simulator 98. Clearly, Voodoo3 was
doing a lot of pumping work as seen by the clear and
crisp textures on the screen.
But, the frame rate was not as high as I expected. But, this
was mainly due to my good-old 200MHz Pentium MMX and other
ageing components of my system. So, if you have a old
computer system, and want to use it for some more time
before throwing it away, get urself a Voodoo3 now. Even, if
you processor is as old as mine!! :)
All my games worked with this card. This has support for
Glide, Direct3D and OpenGL...In fact, after installing
the WickedGL drivers for Quake3, I saw noticable image
quality enhancements.
