My kitchen sink has a weird drain and because of it I cant keep it unclogged very well. Ive gotten to the point where Im wiping off dishes before I wash them so that no stray crumbs of food go down the drain. Ive always had a garbage disposal and since I dont have one in the house I live in now, I have to do the next best thing...wipe every plate. What a pain.
One day while making some cranberry nut bread for our Thanksgiving meal, my son had come down from his apartment over our house and was chatting with me (I just love him living up there!) and I mentioned that drain and how it was building up with gunk and draining very slowly. He asked me if Id ever tried Drano Max Gel in it. I admitted I hadnt and dont often buy drain cleaners because it seems like throwing money down the drain. (pun intended) He ran upstairs and got his bottle of the Drano Max Gel and after reading the directions, pressing down on the childproof cap and turning counterclockwise I poured a small amount in to my drain. I may have used more if I had bought it, but didnt want to use up what my son had so only used perhaps a cup. The bottle recommends using at least ¼ or 16 oz of the bottle for slow running drains.
I was surprised at the thickness of this drain cleaner, because Ive usually seen the much thinner versions. Thick gel does sound like it would attach and do more than the just pouring watery drain cleaner down a drain. The bottle recommends waiting for 15 minutes and then flushing with hot water.
We synchronized our watches, well we looked at the clock and noted when 15 minutes would be up and went about our business of laughing, chatting and comparing scores on World Winner games.
After 15 minutes passed I went in to the kitchen, turned on the hot water and waited to be disappointed. Funny thing was, the drain was draining. The water wasnt building up in the sink like it usually does. Oh, okay, I had the other sinks stopper all the way down and I just knew when I released it then the sink would back up again. Nope, didnt happen. The only thing that happened was that the drain did what drains are supposed to do
drained! Wow, was I impressed. Ive been battling a slow draining drain (geeze how many times can one person use the word drain in one short review?) for a while now, but I will be purchasing Drano Max Gel to keep on hand from now on.
The bottle says that this product will not damage pipes, including plastic, PVC, metal pipes, garbage disposals, and septic systems although I dont think I would want to trust any drain cleaner in a garbage disposal. (been there, done that and the disposal didnt survive although not with this particular product) and that it has a special ingredient to help protect pipes from corrosion and it contains no phosphorous.
Precautions
*Be sure keep safely away from children - when my son brought this drain cleaner down for me to use I couldnt think of where to put it (high cupboards are all full) and ended up setting it on top of my refrigerator in order to be sure it was up and away from my daycare children until I could get this review written. When I purchase a bottle it will be stored safely in my basement until needed, you can never be too cautious as far as children are concerned.
*Keep away from hands and face - rinse immediately if you get this product on skin.
*Never use a plunger - as this product may splash up into the face.
*Do not use in toilets
*Rinse bottle and put cap on tightly before discarding
*Do not reuse container
Do I recommend this product? I certainly do. While my drain wasnt totally clogged I no longer have to stand there waiting for the water to fully drain out so that I can wipe out the sink. Im very happy with the way Drano Max Gel sped up my drain.
I purchased this product last Saturday and it was $3.67 for the 32 oz plastic bottle but there is also a 64 oz bottle available for $6.37 at Wal*Mart.
