| kaysi's Full Review: Nokia 3310 GSM Cellular Phone |
Living in Germany there is a vast amount of choices involving cellular phones (or handies as we affectionately call them). In the past year and a half I have gone through 2 Motorolas and 1 Alcatel...all of which I hated. All 3 would lose signal in the dumbest places, and the Motorolas would last a day on their batteries.
Then I came along my little blue friend the Nokia 3310. Well, he'll be blue until I decide he needs a change, because the 3310 has interchangeable covers that cost around $10-15. Very cool for people like me who get tired of things easily.
He's the perfect size for fitting into inside suit pockets, or back jean pockets. The unit is very sleek and modern looking, I get comments about it all the time. The only problem with the sleekness is the tendency for the little guy to slip right out of my hands. I've dropped him a couple of times with no problems...but a few times he's decided he didn't like it and flew into several pieces all over restaurants, stores, and my boss's office. I thought I had killed him, but after using some puzzle skills learned as a child, I finally got him together again. I'm much more careful now. The surprising thing is even though he has come apart numerous times, he has never busted, cracked, or even scratched...he looks as new as the day I bought him.
As far as his functions, he's got so many I haven't even tried them all in the 6 months I've owned him. I do take advantage of the cool games, especially Bantumi during staff meetings.
The menu is very easy to use, I was even able to change the language from German to English with limited German knowledge.
The phone book is in two places, you can find it in the menu and search it by name, or you can just hit the left arrow button and scroll to the person you want. Both are simple as can be. And if you hit the right arrow button you find the last 18 calls you made, starting with the most recent, and can call them again right from there.
He is text message capable and even has smileys to insert into your messages. You can send the message to multiple people also.
The screen savers are cute, I change mine frequently as I get tired of them. You can have a boring old Nokia symbol or you can have a smiley face or cup of joe.
The neatest feature I must mention is the voice activated dialing. All you do is push the largest button until you hear a tone and say the name of the person you would like to call...the phone recognizes your voice from when you programmed the name during setup and calls them. This is great here in Germany where we are all trying to get used to the hands free law. I don't know how many times I've almost run myself off the road trying to dial a number or find someone in my phone book while driving on the Autobahn! Not cool at all. But the voice activated dialing has saved me and my car.
It has several included tones to use and you can also enter in a few of your own...just look up the codes on the internet and you can get just about any song you can think of as your tone. You can also assign a different tone to as many different people as you want. My husband calls...Fur Elise. My friends call...Thank You by Dido. Work calls...plain old ring that I don't even try to run around the house trying to answer. :)
The battery lasts for more than a sufficient amount of time. I went camping for a week and didn't get a low battery tone until I was on my way home. And I had it on the entire time as I didn't want to miss a call from my dogsitter in case of emergency.
The phone also picks up signal in a lot of places my friend's phones don't. Like in the electronics department standing in the middle of the stereo section. No problem whatsoever for my little blue friend.
The only question I have about the 3310 is that it is said to be Web enabled...although I haven't found this feature in the phone yet.
All in all I love the Nokia 3310 and it is worth the $150 I paid for him to have a phone I did not wish to replace a week after I bought him.
