The main competitor of Timeport is the RIM 957 Blackberry. This device is a personal interactive communicator. It functions like a PDA. It has E mail functions and can be linked to desktop PIM. Some links are ACT Outlook and Lotus Organizer. In some ways it is not as good as RIM but it has many good features.
It has a clamshell design unit which measures 3.75 by 2.85 by 1.2 inches. it weighs only 6.7 ounces. It comes with a rechargeable nickel metal hydride battery. It comes with a belt holster so owners can conveniently wear it on their hips.
The model comes with a 2.5 by 1.75 inch backlit screen display. It shows nine lines of text which is plenty for most users. It is smaller by a third than RIM 957 with respect to screen size. I like the keyboard which is not as cramped as RIM. I like the raised rubber keys.
The power in the unit comes from Motorola's Wisdom OS 4.0. It has an icon driven interface like the RIM 957. It does not use a scroll wheel for navigation but a mouse button.
It is easy to send and receive E mail, find contacts and look up appointments. The RIM model does these functions with alittle more ease, however. There are too many buttons to press compared to RIM.
The model comes with 4.5 MB of memory and 2MB for storage. It comes with a docking cradle which also functions as a charger. I ran the Timeport for five days without having to charge the battery. The advantage over RIM is one unique feature. Timeport accepts business cards from other IR enabled devices such as Palm and Pocket PCs. It does this via an infrared port.
The Timeport competes well with RIM. However, don't trade the RIM 957 for this Timeport model. RIM has some keen advantages.
