Who buys gemstones on the web? Well, it turns out that I did, quite unexpectedly! I was looking for a blue sapphire of a particular size that was "cushion cut" for a very special ring I was having made. Turns out that cushion cut is hard to come by. My local jeweler searched for months but couldn't find the right sapphire from any of her suppliers.
Out of curiousity I searched the web and found SimplySapphires.com. In browsing their website, I found several blue sapphires that met my specifications.
Of course I was dubious and nervous about buying a gemstone from someone on the web. So, I emailed John at Simply Sapphires and asked several questions. He promptly replied to each of my requests. I also noted that they had a very positive review by the local Better Business Bureau, which made me more comfortable.
I had a hard time deciding between two specific sapphires. John sent both to me the very next day, with a promise that I would return the one I didn't like within 10 days. That was not a problem. I took both gems to my jeweler and we determined that one was a better fit. I sent the other one back. John didn't even charge my credit card until that point, which I really appreciated.
Although Simply Sapphires says that they can send gems to the AGTA for you, my husband wanted me to send it to the agency myself. I did that, and about 10 days later received my AGTA report. The sapphire was exactly as John had described it on his website: natural, not heat treated, with the advertised dimensions and caret weight. My jeweler said it had a few insignificant inclusions -- nothing that the eye could see. It is a beautiful gem and I am thrilled to have found it. It will look beautiful in my ring, which will be an antique style with diamonds surrounding the sapphire.
In a nutshell, I want to put your mind at ease that these are reputable people and they sell quality gemstones. They are responsive and thoughtful. I have the highest praise for SimplySapphires.com.
